Aspirings take note: The inn is just us and we live here: can't call-in sick and stay home. Don't really have a contingency plan.
DW hasn't been sick in 20 years, but yesterday she came down with the stomach flu. Today we had a holiday event scheduled and I had to make the call. Even though I might be able to pull it off solo, I thought the guests would be concerned about missing wife and exposure to an unfriendly virus so they deserved the right to cancel, no charges. We are out 1K in bookings and prepaid food. Rats. I'll be eating smoked salmon for a month. Unless I'm next ...

that's awful! i'm so sorry.
i lived 'inn' and had a chambermaid who was a bright penny. taught her how to do the basics of check in and out and breakfast .. and one weekend (two nights) she was in charge when i was away. she was thrilled and it was worth it to pay her.
but as for the flu in the house -- you did the right thing.

Not for an event, but I won't let Gomez in the kitchen when he's sick. The way I call in is I dial the inn phone and tell him l'm going back to bed. I'll get back up to clean but I won't be around guests.

Very sorry to hear that, I hope she is on the mend soon, and that you are free and clear of it!

I haven't been sick since 1985. Seriously. But last time I was sick, I wouldn't have minded one bit if I had died, so I know how it can be. It happens. Just glad it's rare.
But I'm amazed at the "kids" out there who think real life is like school days, when you say home over every little thing you can get away with.

yesterday - dripping cold, today bit better - show must go on.DH is one day behind so we are hoping it follows the same as mine which hasn't been to bad.
DH got glass stuck in his finger then let it grow over - we had to take him for hand surgery in the nearest big city where there is a specialist unit to make sure the didnt damage his finger - only slot 7am luckily not many in and my parents came and filled in as best they could.

And doesn't this make you appreciate her that much more? My DH jokes that he could handle things no problem but if I call on him for help, he takes three times as long to do anything. I'm NOT complaining. I'll take his help when I can get it but thank goodness I'm very healthy, touch wood. My only problem is the occasional flair up with seasonal allergies. Right now, I look like I've cried my eyes out all night. Thankfully, people are here for my hospitality and not my good looks!

I hope there was no damage and his hand healed quickly. May the cold & flu bugs fly OVER and BEYOND each innspiring, choosing to land on your Town PITA

I had one occasion where I had to call guests to cancel them and refer them away. I was coughing so hard that I had to go to the doctor for a codeine cough suppressant...and trust me, I am never sick.
Soooooo, sorry to hear that your dw went down for the count. It happens no matter how hard we try to stay healthy.
Hope she's over it soon and it doesn't hit you, too!!

to be fair - healed super fast, isn't 100% as bit of nerve damage in the side, but you don't really need to feel things with the side of your finger anyway so its not too much of an issue.
DH however got something like food poisoning starting 10pm last night - was up and down at 30 minute intervals which was fab - had to call in parents to help me this morning and they are troopers but exasperating. Doubly tough as the chamber maid went on hols this morning for 10 days so all the rooms to do :( - went shopping with mum and had pancakes and blew it all off!

Good for you. You have to so something like that every so often to retain sanity.

Thanks for the kind comments. DW is slowly on the mend. I dodged it, but it looks like we won't be roasting the duck I had planned. We had a guest for 3 days that helped me make major inroads on the smoked salmon (and on the red wine, but that was not my concern).

OH, yes! This is a grand thought. I would so love to see that happen.
