I've read in the past that residents of Brazil travel a lot and spend a lot. Google Analytics consistently lists Brazil as the #2 location of visitors to my website (on average visitors to my site are #1 USA 88%, #2 Brazil 7%). My question is, do you think these are legitimate tourists? Or is Brazil a place I can discount, like hits from Russia?
If Brazil is legit, I wonder if there's any way to reel some of them in. Mixing a little Portuguese into the text on my homepage?
I do recall a few years ago when we were on vacation in Italy and ran into some people from Brazil who had done the "Blues Trail" from St. Louis to New Orleans, passing through our area.
I'm bored with Americans. Want someone interesting to visit here!

We've not had a lot of website hits from Brazil but we've had a fair number of guests. Colombia is another SA country we've seen a number of guests from.
What they like to do - touristy stuff. Seriously. They want to do all the outdoor stuff. And they love sweets.
Can you figure out what the keywords are? That might help answer your questions.

You have me on a good start. Thanks!

if it helps - uk research shows they are the biggest emerging market - them and russians, have money want to travel and being Spanish speaking with English as a second language they can be understood most everywhere. I don't know how you would influence them but its even more of a legit market for you as closer than UK. Would point out in the UK what is holding them back is Visa's - don't know if it is the same in the USA.

Brazil speaks Portuguese, but they understand Spanish pretty well. I don't know about the visa situation either. The US has recently taken steps to lessen the visa burden for the Chinese to visit here.

Our state has been gearing up for a couple of years for a big influx of Chinese tourists. It is starting to happen. There are non-stops and the airlift is a huge factor in travel. Brazil is the center of attention just now given their hosting role, but for us, there is no airlift and the visa situation has been unfavorable for a long while.

Ah, I see that. Did a little looking. To visit the US as a Brazilian tourist we require a visa:
  • $160 to apply for one!!!
  • Then they must travel to a US embassy and pass an interview.
  • And supply a stack of documentation.
  • And several other steps.
I can't imagine a tourist going through all that, and more, when they could more easily go visit a different country.
I hate this.

I am acquainted with an innkeeper in California who is going to Brazil the end of the month. She had to get a visa, shots, a meds regimen before she leaves......

Yes, I remember reading a few years ago that Brazil is making it harder for Americans to travel there, in retaliation for all the impediments the US put on them coming here after 911.

For a 48 hour stopover we had to spend several hundred $, hire a surrogate in LA to personally obtain our visas because they only allow you to pick them up in person, make sure we had all the shots and meds, and recite the brazil national anthem while standing on one leg.

Relatively easy for us, it was under $90 for the visa, went on Monday, picked it up the next Monday. But the rules of reciprocity always exist, bring your passport and it sits in a box for 6 weeks, because that's how long it takes to process theirs.
Our visa is good for 5 years, length of the passport. Of course you no longer pay for Chile and it costs is $132 to be in Chile for a few hours.

We have the UK as #2 at 14%, followed by Canada, Germany, Italy, France for the top 5 non-US. Brazil is not in the top ten and by the time you get to Italy and France each is already less than 1%.
There must be something about your place that is attractive to Brazilians, or the Brazilian search engine spiders. Try putting up a special on your webpage to see if these are real inquiries to your site, it could be a huge learning experience that could be a lot of fun and yield some new customers too.
It could also point to a technical or a security issue. If you can track hits to your website by IP then see if the Brazil hits are all from one small IP range. Then see if it is a misidentified server that has wrong geodata or if it is all coming from a single Brazilian University or single Brazilian telecom then report it to abuse@ the offending ISP

Google Analytics shows it's distributed all over the country, with more hits logically from the more populated areas:
State - Percent of hits
Sao Paula - 30%
Minas Gerais - 15%
Rio de Janerio - 15%
Rio Grande do Sul - 9%
Ceara - 6%
Goias - 6%
Mato Grosso do Sul - 6%
Santa Catarina - 6%
Parana - 3%
Sergipe - 3%

Looking at that it really seems that you have sparked a genuine interest from the area.
I hope you can figure out what it is that is causing this. Even if a few % of these hits were to turn into rooms it could be thousands for your business.
