I had an interesting call today. I was informed that being listed by the Better Business Bureau is advantageous to a business as people check with them before doing business with a company. AND it is by invitation only.
She did not know how long I had been in business, size of my business, nor if I had a web site. Hmmmm. I said I suppose there is a fee involved with this listing. Reply - well yes. When I queried how much - it depends on the size of the business. Do you have a web site?
I TOLD HER THAT ANY BUSINESS THAT DID NOT HAVE A WEB SITE WAS AN IDIOT AND i HAVE NEVER BEEN ACCUSED OF BEING AN IDIOT. i ALSO TOLD HER (sorry hit the caps lock and am not going back) I have been in business 19 years without the BBB and was not going to waste her time nor mine. No thank you. Goodbye.
They must be hard up to start making recruiting calls.

People don't check with them. They type in the name of the business and the word review and go from there.
Yes, my guess is they haven't made the transition from phone calls and letters to internet and Angie's list.
I had someone ask to speak with the beverage manager yesterday. I asked if she had looked up the size of our business before calling? Did she know what we did or what we served? No, none of it. I suggested her next sales pitch would go better if she knew those things in advance.

I used to travel all the time for work and recreation. I NEVER checked a BBB website.

Even in the dark ages of my youth, I never checked them. I was surprised they were still around. There is a commercial on the radio here now that trumpets their service (I think it is the gold selling one) that says they have a great rating with the BBB. First time I heard it my thought "Who cares about that".

oh, yuck.
have you ever worked in a 'calling center'? sometimes in a big room (think boiler room) sometimes from home. the callers are given lists of numbers to call ... usually on screen now .... with minimal information. and told to sell sell sell. it's a dreary job and pretty sad, lots of folks hang up on you but first cuss you out. most don't know the reputation or the background of their employer. it's a paycheck. they don't do research on who they're calling. they have a script. most of these jobs are commission based so time is money.
yes ... my late mother in law did this kind of work. she had no education to speak of and couldn't do manual labor after a certain age. i always think of her on the other end of the line when i firmly say 'no thank you' and hang up. i picked up the extension one time when she was making her calls and was appalled at what someone was screaming at her. there really was no need for that. just get off the phone.
of course i understand some of the telemarketers are rude and probably deserve what they get.
my silly oldest sister insists on 'chatting' with telemarketers. she has beginning dementia. they call and call and call. and she chats and chats and chats, but rarely buys. i suppose some of them think they're on their way to making a big sale. could be ... if she had any money.

I figure most calls are like you describe. Just a big room where the calls are auto dialed.
Some of them sound like it's some poor schmuck who got handed a list. It's probably part of their job, but the part they like the least.
Rachel from card holder services called again yesterday. When I got a live person, I asked to speak with Rachel. I kept asking for Rachel. They hung up on me. BTW, Rachel spoofed my own phone number on the caller ID.

.
I get my number on the caller ID every so often. It is usually dead air.

well if a scamelemarketer calls someone 29 times in a week and you get handed the list with their name on it, you better understand the meaning of, "this ain't personal"

I have gotten that call too. Hundreds of dollars for nothing more than the use of the logo.
Every now and again I see an ad with the BBB logo and I laugh. Fools - IMHO

Many, many years ago I called tried to reach the BBB regarding bad business dealing I had. The phone was never answered, just rang off the hook for 2 hrs. Tried the next day and the same thing. Guess that is the reason the business had a high rating in the first place.
