Just got a wonderful thank you card from number 1 son and his new wife wherein he recounts a story that must be at least 30 years old of something I did for him and his sister.
And how he is using that now to understand how he and his bride can co mingle their money and everyone can still be happy.
They are listening. Even when they're rolling their eyes. You keep talking. It's getting thru.

so cool.
as an example, but from the other side of the coin, I often wish I could tell my Mother how smart she was. :)

beach house I agree! wish my parents were still here so i could do that.

and on the flip side- 12 years ago our nephew thanked us for the money we sent but said he wished we could have been there instead.
Never forgot it. Now we have made a point to be there even though that means 5000 miles. When people tell you what they want, it pays to listen. Besides, we like them.

New DIL thanked us profusely for dropping everything to go to their last minute wedding. #1 son would not push us to go but she said he was very happy and told her he was glad we came.
But it's hard doing the 3000 miles trek for events.

One DD told us how she corrected a then boyfriend's parents who said we must be lax in discipline because their college son had a Midnight curfew and she who had just graduated from hs had none. (I figured if I had not done the job by then it wasn't going to be done at all.) After her twin graduated from Police Academy and was on the streets, we got so many "Thank You for being the parents you were" cards from her it was embarrassing.
As adults, they are, for the most part, following in our footsteps with children activities and discipline. Yes, they really did watch and listen. (They also observed their cousins' permissive up-bringing and for the most part, avoid that side of the family.)
