4 Ways to Increase Your Ineffectiveness
excerpt:
There's never a better time to evaluate one's approach to doing business than during troubling times. And every one of us is vulnerable to adopting and/or coddling bad habits. And many times we don't even realize some of the things we do are actually working against us.

Bad Business Habit #323
Giving a discount to someone who didn't ask for one.
Almost fell for that again today, but caught myself just in time by saying to myself, "Many people do not care about what it cost."

Just had a 20 min conversation with someone who asked for multiple different discounts. Talked with them for awhile, explained the seasonality of the destination and gave the name of a place that charges $50 less. Got the booking. No discount. Then chatted for another 10 minutes.

"Oh Geez...I do this all the time with repeat guests, always wondering if that is why they keep calling. I can be very brave with new guests but I'm just an old softie for the regulars.

We have a few repeaters who get the same % off each year. We raise our rates most years, so it still works out to a little more and we never go below our best available discount.
Where I get weak is when I am getting the bill ready and I see that they didn't select a discount when they reserved online and could have. I have to remind myself that they are not entitled to a discount and I am not being deceptive by not adding it on after they elected not to select it to begin with.
