WEB DESIGN QUESTION
Do you know the standard "favorite" size for slider images on a website? It seems they are getting larger and larger, and definitely closer up photos. Also is there an across the board best number to have? Ie 5 or 6 and 7 or 8 are too many?
Any thought? Any expertise?
Share links if you must but would love to hear what you think on this subject.

Actually even though we are seeing more and more and larger sliders...the trend it to go away from them. Oh by the way JB. Your theme can now be made responsive with an update.
You should download it from the site.
here is some food for thought:

But...all of this aside...I still like a look of it if used well. As far as number, all depends...I don't like to more than 5 and usually do 3. You have to compress images for sure.

Compression is key. Remember someone posted that article about sliders a few months ago. For those of us who want to share as many photos as possible it hurt. haha

I like bigger photos but here's what I've heard from callers, "I didn't know there was anything else but the photos."
Meaning they never scrolled past the photos to see the text so they called to find out if we had any rooms open, complete description of every room, etc.
More photos rather than fewer. Don't go 'too fast' on the speed they scroll. I've also heard, "the pictures went by too fast, I couldn't pick a room."
Then again, too slow and you lose the kids.
On the home page - several exterior photos, breakfast, best room photo, something striking/colorful to do in the area. That might be 5 - 6 photos.
Definitely the best shots you have, cropped to the most striking, captivating view.
(Of course mine are not like that. But I know what I like.)
And I was just going to add I think the trend is toward clean lines rather than sliders. But we're in the attraction biz. We have to show photos. Big, beautiful photos.

We used three sliders mostly. I think that's plenty when you have them on many pages.
Our new website breaks some general rules, some rather boldly, has mediocre SEO and has, quite frankly, changed everything for the better. We have never had a website so powerful.

mediocre SEO comes from lack of descriptive text on pages with your keywords and phrases. Something you can to something about ;-)

It may becoming passe, but I still love the sliders..
Figures... I'm working on a new website with sliders. By the time I get my act together they will be totally gone. Such is life.
.
Yes, our "new" website has an abundance of sliders 1024 x447 which seem to best fit the scale of the rest of the text: 9 on home page, 2-3 on others, 9 on activities page. Was able to compress to an average of 60K and the quality is still awesome.
To caption or not caption, 'tis my question?
They are all my own local shots... will people assume they actually are of our locale? Or does it detract from the overall impression?

I don't think everything should revolve around worrying about SEO and the "latest" from website research world. Some geeks get lost in testing and don't understand the holistics around and experience.
This is a very visual business. I think a lot of people LIKE sliders. Perhaps it is more important to ensure they are very useful, contain some of the suggested elements themselves, and don't crowd out the critical stuff of your main/home page.
More useful would be, how does determine best size and number of pix in sliders, best placement and STILL get good SEO and usability?

I think 9 is way too many. People do not sit and stare at the screen for that long. I would choose ones that BEST represent YOUR B & B and use them on the home page. Use the local stuff for other pages.

Ok. That's your answer right there. Short attention span. Short caption on slider photo. Small number of photos.

Down to 7 sliders, always hard to edit myself...

I agree but my point is that even with that, the website is rockin' the free world.

Can you post a link to the theme you have purchased and I can give you a good idea of the size of the sliders.

As a photographer's portfolio, between 5 and 8. For a slider I would do about 3 to 5 at the most. Beyond that you lost them.

Surely the problem isn't losing them. I'm assuming the only reason not to have a lot of photos in the slider is that many photos slow down the page or slider load time. Otherwise, I don't see a drawback to having more than a few photos. Those who enjoy them will keep watching, and the others will go on and check out the rest of the page, or the rest of the website.
Nobody's going to leave the website because of too many photos in the slider. If they move on, they were going to anyway.
