Got 2 notices from Amer. Express today saying they're doing away with the flat $7.95 monthly fee, and that in the future the cost of accepting their cards will be a percent of each transaction.
The notice to my inn said the new rate on all cards is 3.50%.
The notice to my other business said the new rate is $2.55%.
I guess the rate is based on how many transactions you processed in the last year. Or maybe they just don't like innkeepers.
 
Square takes 2.75 for swiped cards, mc, visa, disc and amex.
 
anything to do with "card present" for higher rate?

Amex sent me a notice that they were going to charge me a monthly fee of $5 plus the percentage. I called to cancel... they removed the fee. Last year we moved all Amex from processing at 3.5% on our terminal to Square for 2.75%. Amex couldn't match the rate.
But I will also be honest, I cancelled my Amex card after 25 years. I can't believe how stupid a company they are, they used an automated telephone system to take the cancellation, not even trying to retain my business.

My AMEX are from people who booked online through ResKey and Authorize.net, so none are swiped, and that may indeed be the difference.
