How do you handle it when a guest has a tv turned up so loudly in their room that the other rooms can hear it even if the other guests are not actively complaining?
I just walked thru the house and I can hear the tv from the living room. If no one says anything to me should I assume they don't care?

No, they care. They just may not have the gumption to confront a stranger about it.
The most dangerous guests are those who won't speak out. They swallow their dissatisfaction and say nothing ... until they regurgitate it in a TA, google or Facebook review.

You knock and ask politely if they can turn the volume down because others can hear.
Last time I did this... family member staying here!

Agree, they care , but don't want the confrontation. As innkeeper, I just knocked on their door and asked them to please turn the volume down.

Guest is probably a little hard of hearing. It's a shame remotes don't have a way to limit how high they can be turned.
In the good old days you could have rigged a way the volume knob couldn't be turned up past a certain point.
Hijacking, but speaking of the good old days, I saw a video being shared all over FB the other day of something that was absolutely amazing to the youngsters. It shows how you can make your own microwave popcorn or kettle corn by buying a bag of popcorn at the grocery, adding some to a paper bag (sugar optional), and popping it in the microwave. The kids were amazed at this "new" idea.
I remember the first microwave I ever saw was at the county fair about 1968. The local Amana dealer was popping corn in a paper bag and people were crowded around every bit as amazed as when we got our first automatic door at a grocery store here. People would drive to that store just to see the door work. Most didn't even go inside the store!

Yes guest s do care .But they are not forth right in always telling you . But would rather say some thing in a review about how loud the TV was.
Just like us we are also scared to say some thing to a guest , as they too might get up set. I believe it works both ways. I know I thought long and hard to go to our guest and ask ever so politely to please turn down the TV. Some guest just don't hear well or young ones even are so used to hearing loud noises ear plugs always in the ears or music tuned up loudly in their cars. They are just not always aware of just how loud things are.

I think we discussed this a few years ago and one clever solution was for the innkeeper to have a spare remote, go outside the room door and turn the TV down from the hall.
Might have to do it a couple of times if they turn it back up, but they might eventually get the message with no confrontation needed.

I ended up not confronting the guest but going into the empty room next to them and turning on a radio. Loudly. They turned their tv down. All is well in the kingdom.

Glad that worked in your favor. Guests did that in one room and the original noise maker complained to ME. It was when I went up to chat with the 'culprit' that I found out he was not the culprit at all, it was the complainer. Noise war!

Some TVs appear to have a hidden "hotel mode" that allows you to set things like max volume. It will vary for each manufacturer and may be in your instruction manual (their site, if you not have manual).

It's another one of those guests who has to have something running in the background. Left to go out and tv still on. Probably runs all day at home, too.
Have not seen them since check in. No breakfast, nothing.

This post reminds me of my sister and cousin's revenge on our uncles that are all over six feet. When you are six there is only so much you can do. They took the TV remote and hide under the table with a skirt that was positioned behind the sofa. (This was before one remote would control everything so there were many remotes on the coffee table.) With the remote they put the volume up as the football game played. The uncles commented on the TV high volume so one of them grabbed another remote so the cousin lowed it along with him until it was too low so they couldn't hear so he had to get up to fix it since he couldn't get volume to go up. During a commercial they changed channels so they spent a nice long time watching commercials instead of their game....then they went crazy when they finally figure out someone had hijacked their TV and they were the only ones in the room as the TV jumped channels, volume went up and down, etc....
