What type of dairy products do you put out for guests to use? Do you have several?
We have half and half and skim milk always available.
I ask because we sometimes get the hairy eyeball. "Don't you have... cream, whole milk, 2%?" Whatever we don't have.

I put out 2% milk, cream ( 18%) and available upon request -canned milk. The canned milk is usually requested by the 'natives'.
Milk is too expensive around here to have too much choice.

Brings back a nightmare of a coworker who went ballistic because, where they usually had cream, nondairy creamers, whole, 2%, 1% and skim, he flipped because the 2% was gone. And I was thinking - you mix the whole (3.7%) with skim, and is that not 2%??

I put out 1/2 & 1/2 unless milk is requested and then it is skim.
If 2-legged animals are on the agenda, I ask what % to have in-house for them - and what kind of cereal to have also just in case.

half & half, 2% and non-dairy.
I keep the non-dairy for those with dairy allergies like today.
But I am amazed how many choose it over the real stuff.

Here's some fun from America's Dairyland (sorry, Wisconsin).
Give guests whole milk, and tell them it's 97% Fat Free Milk. (it is)
People think there's a huge difference in the butterfat content between the different types of milk. There's not.

Good point. Everyone will drink up. 97% fat free!

We use 1% for our kids cereal so that's what I purchase and put out for milk. We also serve 1/2 & 1/2. There are non dairy creamers in the refrigerator too.

I figure that 1/2+1/2 works for the cream users and 1% works for the milk users. We don't get any complaints about the type of dairy but if someone specifically requests skim milk we could always water down the 1%.

Half & half. Mini moos. I had Fat Free Milk in the fridge. Kept the non-refrigerated soy on the pantry shelf. And always had evaporated milk in the pantry, too. Very rarely had folks who wanted a glass of milk, since I only had 12+ years kids here. That would probably make a difference in what I kept on hand.

Half and Half and milk. Whatever is the cheapest this time. Whatever diary products that comes back from the dining room is turned into homemade yogurt. We love yogurt here!

On check-in I show the Keurig as the source of decaf and off hours coffee -- at that time, I'll ask if they take milk or cream and put a 2 oz pitcher in the guest lounge fridge or service bar mini. Breakfast default is half-n-half, with 2% or almond or soy on request. We don't put cereal out, so no milk unless someone requests.
And along the line of the sweetener question, I'd say the demand for almond or soy has been less than half previous years. Other trends: Meat ok, but no pork, virtually disappeared (bye-bye chicken sausages). Vegetarian is about the same at 10%, GF maybe dropping a little, shy of 10%.

More guests wanting the veggie sausage and delighted we have it. They mention it's yummy.

Veggie sausage? Morningstar. Original patties. They come 2 to a pack so you're not opening a box of 12 just for the rest to get freezer burn.
If you don't use a lot of them I suggest putting the extras in a freezer bag, the box doesn't really protect them once it's opened.

The Morningstar tastes like sawdust to me. I use Field Roast and they're vegan. More expensive, but freeze really well. I usually mix them in with whatever I'm cooking (eggs, tofu, etc.). What vegetarian & vegan really like is when I saute mushrooms & add the sliced sausage in towards the end just to put a little color on the slices. They're very tasty. You can get them in supermarkets where they sell the fresh tofu & veggie/vegan refrigerated products, or if you have a Cost co they're in larger quantity and cheaper. Just be sure to take off the plastic casing before you cook them.
