Just came back from the pharmacy. I bought a couple of things plus a bottle of melatonin. (I'm going to try it.)
After paying, the register spat out a coupon for vitamins/supplements! I hate when that happens.
The clerk looked at the coupon and said, "I'm going to take this coupon." I thought that was a bit forward, but then he opened the register and gave me $2. He said, "it's just not right that you get the coupon after you buy the item."
Holy cow. That has never happened before. I mean getting a refund. I'm always gettng coupons for what I just bought.

Great clerk! $2 is real money, too. I need to start paying more attention to coupons.

I have never in my entire life received a coupon for an item I have purchased. Every time I hand it back to them, nope. Not even gonna try it.
Example from another thread: If I bought Stevia I get a coupon for sweet n low. I have yet to get one and go "oh good I use that!" but they know that.
Good for you! I would be happy to save $2

I hate "catalina" coupons. I get them at the check-out and I'm not going to be back for months. I would have to walk back through the store and purchase.
But I do have to admit that the machine at the front of the store spit out a coupon that doubled on an item on sale... so cake mix was 25c a box yesterday!

Yes! The grocery store does that all the time. Why don't you try this instead? Never for real food tho.
I said to the clerk yesterday, "if I buy aspirin I usually get a coupon for cough syrup because the machine thinks I'm sick, right?"

The worst is when it gives you $1 off a future purchase at the same grocery store. Damn, now I have to go back and buy something for a $1. WHY?!?!

Sidebar- Melatonin does a very nice thing for me. It allows me to return to sleep if I wake. I do not have a challenge falling asleep, but with returning to sleep after 5 hours of sleep.

Do you take it when you wake up after 5 hours or before you go to bed?

melatonin is designed for before bed. It elevates your melatonin level for the nighttime period, and it is not immediate.. Don't think you want to be taking it after most of the night is gone.
OTOH, there is little evidence it helps, unless you are in a disturbed situation that lowers your melatonin level, such as shift work or flights. (saw recent article).

I am sure you meant to say "there is little medical evidence it helps"
One thing the medical professionals do say is that it is not harmful [as with any natural supplements, as long as you stay within recommended levels] and if you find it helps there is nothing wrong with taking it.
I know it helps me. Immensely! I have a difficult time going back to sleep once wakened with the 'need'. If I take Melatonin before bed, I will go back to sleep with no problems. I am a much happier person when I get a full nights sleep!

Not sure the difference. "Personal" experience is not something that means anything to the general population.
If it helps an individual, and it is not due to a particular disruption, then that particular individual may have an issue in which it helps. It is known that as people age, some people make too little of it.
"Nothing wrong" is not entirely accurate. For some people as with many supplements, there can be side effects. There is no recommended level. Many people take way too much; there if evidence that the optimal amount is about 0.3 mg. Although there is other evidence that more may help. Experimentation certainly has some value.
The general consensus is, that taking melatonin has a modest benefit at best.
I am an insomniac, and for me, it does not really help.
For any person considering this, they should do some due diligence and educate themselves.

I think that's nice work on the clerk's part - it would leave me feeling more positive about the establishment. I didn't know melatonin could help with getting back to sleep - that sounds worth trying to me!

Nice work by the clerk.
One of my first jobs I was taking returns for a home goods and hardware type store. An older gentleman can in with a broken toilet seat and a receipt for a store that had been closed in our small town for about two years. As I tried to explain to him that we were not the same store as his receipt indicated, the owner swooped in and said "sir please go back and pick any toilet seat that is comparable to this one, just bring it back up so we can write it out of inventory" As I stammered to the owner and held the receipt to his face trying to explain it wasn't purchased at our company, let alone our location, the owner explained the elderly gentleman was simply confused not trying to rip us off. "What does it cost us to give away that toilet seat?" he asked. "About $7", I said. "So instead of telling people what a terrible place we are, for $7 he is going to tell everyone he knows how great this store is"
I am glad to see the clerk gave you the credit for the coupon, and to see my old boss was right.
Thanks for sharing what the clerk did with us.
