Maybe I'll just start saying, "that's so sad," when someone explains they're fruten glee.
I think I may be more aggressive asking if it's celiac. I really don't want anyone to feel ill but I also don't want to tie myself up in knots worrying.

As before, it's not a healthier choice and is best left for those that are physically impacted by gluten (celiac).

There's been a couple of foodie programs in the UK recently taking about this fad, basically saying that food companies are promoting gluten free products as a healthier choice at ridiculously inflated prices (one product was 75p for the standard and £4.25 for gluten free) when there's absoluteey no evidence at all that a gluten free diet is better for you unless you have celiac disease.
The other fad I've seen trashed lately is detox. One woman was paying £50 a day for this fruit drinks and a doctor said if you read the packaging the companies are very careful not to make any medical claims because there's absoluteley no medical evidence that detoxing is beneficial and in fact our bodies are naturally detoxing all the time, that the purpose of our liver and kidneys. One woman who wrote a foodie blog said that she felt a lot less bloated, I said to DH "Of course she feels less bloated, she hasn't eaten for 3 days!!"

tipsy once had a guest who 'couldn't' eat the skin of any fruit. She expected the blueberries to be peeled.
I'm not the person who enjoys the challenge of wowing the fussy eater.

peeled blueberries --> Really????
I would have provided her a potato peeler and said "go at it!"
Seriously, I sometimes think the "1%" refers to that category of people who exist to torment others. The people who do not mind stealing the towels, make drugs in someone else's place, smoking heavily in a rental unit, figure out how to maximize their own value at the expect of others, banging on the doors 5 hours before checkin, etc.
Thinking again, Mort handling 30 calls for a wedding party, and then getting the whole shebang canceled.
Reminds me of a line from movie "Maid in Manhattan" when the head of the service department tells JeLo - "thought we serve them, we are not their servants!"

there is also a related problem with these grains beyond gluten. But I think 1/2 of 1% have gluten problems and there are other components that seem to impact another 1/2 of 1% or so.
For all others (98% +), these grains have a ton of health benefits such as insoluble fiber, etc. Colon cancer, filling you up to prevent overeating/obesity, etc.
It would be like avoiding nuts, shrimp, fish, eggs, yogurt, or other things just because some are allergic or intolerant...
Should everyone give up dogs or cats, because it is proven that other people are allergic?
30,000+ are killed on American highways. Should we all stop driving?

More over, there is some evidence that it can be worse for you. We eat a whole grain diet and when I make the gluten free recipes, I have to cringe a little at how devoid of nutrition and fiber some of them are.

I used to eat avocados by the handfuls and laugh "You're all wrong...you'll see!"
I just sent this to my Mother "How can you tell you are from California? You have avocados lined up in your kitchen window sill" She said, Woe, that is so true I have three there right now! (as do I)

Our avocado tree is hanging with tons of fruit. If it can survive the heavy winds we are having, there will be our own avocados for months... and it is gluten free!

Same for the fat-free and sugar-free - leave it out, up the price BUT load it up with something else so it will taste better. Sugar-free? OK, now the salt and/or fat content just went up with the price of course. Himself has been on the sugar-free AND fat-free for decades now - THAT has almost succeeded in giving me that slight push I needed to go totally 'round the bend.... Live better through chemistry. (Reminds me of the fat people who think if they take that magic pill or drink the expensive concoction they will magically become Twiggy.)

Yup, that's what I do. If they are celiac we really can't feed them and I tell them that. If they want to bring their own food they can store it in the guest refrigerator. If they are not celiac I do not jump through hoops for them. They can eat scrambled eggs and corn bread several days in a row if they want.
