And the usual cadre of comments from people who do NOT understand what it is all about. AND never will.

This are idiots who think that this is about individuals when it's really about big business and under the table money. And stealing taxes from everyone.

This has come to the attention in Calgary Alberta. A couple rent their house out to a couple through A-- I.. R and when the owner returned back home they found their house was trashed. They say the police are looking into it.
Jon did you see the piece on TV your way? The guests did a mighty fine mess trashing all parts of there house. We just sent another message to our council about this big business, to date we have not heard from council. But it sure made the news here. Great ! I say

Oh, I saw it. What they haven't really told people is that their insurance won't cover it and will be cancelled because they violated the residential clause. Then their mortgage will be invalidated because they don't have insurance. And it will be tough to find another company to insure them. Air will likely step in an pay for the damaged, but only because they want to protected their over-evaluation on the market. Their evaluation is what they want to protect, not the homeowners.
As I said before, I wonder what the burn-out rate is on Air. We know that maybe 50% of their listings are now big guys and that the little guy is someone they are hiding behind, but what is their burn-out rate for the little guys. We know that the burn out rate for innkeepers is often just a year... I'm sure Air is much lower... people don't realize the privacy they lose.

Last year, there was a web service that made it possible to locate a lot of the illegal hotels on AirBnB. It got press and was used. Then, AirBnB changed their API (interface) that made it so it no longer worked.
What is it other than AirBnB KNOWS they are encouraging their clients to break the law, and did this to prevent others from identifying illegal hosts?

They absolutely know. They removed the counts of the number of hosts too. And they even move the pins on the map to hide. We helped the government learn how to look up places. I hate that people aren't paying their share of the taxes... I pay so much in tax.
