The search for the "right" credit card processor is seriously blowing my mind. Does anyone have any suggestions? Who do you use for credit card processing and do you like them? Is that too personal a question to ask?
Thanks
Chris

Square is the best answer. Set it up on your computer. Then download the ap to your smartphone (iPhone or android) and your iPad.. The gizmo is free. The guest signs on your device with finger or stylus (I have a bunch of those that I got cheap on am azon). The guest gets a receipt via e-mail, text to phone, or can say not needed - but the receipt will have the signature.
The beauty is: ALL cards have same 2.75% if swiped and 3.5% if keyed in (you MUST have the cvv AND the zip code of the BILLING address if keying in (card not present). I did not take Amex or Disc before, I do now.
Best part? You get an e-mail that you took a transaction from xxxx for $xxx.xx and xxx.xx (the amount minus the 2.75% will be deposited to your account. Unless it is Sunday, the next day you will get an e-mail, xxx.xx has been deposited to your bank account and will be available in 2-3 business days. It does a running total for the day, will give you reports as to how much the commission was using the reports tab.... It is easy and less than any of the processors and NO contract/NO hidden fees. No charge if not used.

One of the more expensive mistakes you can make is to get caught in a contract that goes on forever.
Square works well for a lot of situations. Those using it here can explain the pros and cons.
If you decide to go with a regular swipe machine, try not to rent the machine. You can buy them outright for about $300-400. Make sure you get the new machine that does chip and pin.
What do the owners have now? Does the machine meet the new reqs? Is it transferring with the business?
You'll need to learn the terminology if you decide to get the swipe machine rather than square.
There are multiple levels of processing fees. Most processors quote you the plain vanilla card fee of 1.78%. (Or thereabouts.) No one uses these cards. All the rewards cards, business cards, international cards can cost up to 4% per transaction.
Also ask about fees to call in (every time the machine calls in to process a card there is a fee of about $ .12 - .20.)
Basically, just ask what fees there are.
No one will quote you the same fee structure so you can't compare different processors. They know this.
This is why square is so popular. There's a standard fee for everything.

We have Amazon for our cc. They gave us a little device that sticks into the top of a smart phone to swipe the card or you can opt to enter the numbers instead. We love it! It sends out an email receipt to the person and keeps a record of all the cc charges it has made right at your finger tips for quick reference. It's simple, quick, easy to use, and the guests think it's cute!

Elavon (US Bank) via the Cost Warehouse. No setup charge, monthly contract, low rates. I use Square just for Amex because their rate was so much higher than Square.

I use Amazon too. I also have Square, but Amazon works as well and the rate is a tiny bit better.

Using Square as well. It works well for small B&B's. There are price thresholds where it would be wiser to have a standard processor as processors lower their fees if your ave monthly sales are above a certain level. I have no idea where that benchmark is, I just know I am not near it.

We just bought our inn in September, so we are new, too. I wish you the best!
We use Square and I am happy with it. It is easy, predictable and the funds are transferred to our account within a couple of days. The previous owners apparently rented a cc machine because they listed over $1000 in cc machine rental fees in their expenses each year. That was on top of the processing fees. I don't know why they would do that - we only have 5 guest rooms.

I use Elavon as well. I'm listed as seasonal so I sent it back when I slowed down last year. The threshold here for me is 5000 for the month. I used PaydPro in the off season. Monthly fee, yes Square would have been cheaper, but I get more locals when I'm slower and for dome reason they seem to prefer debit which Square doesn't take. It cost a few bucks more but they were happy I had it. Plus it reads your chip cards. I'll switch devices at the end of this month. No contracts with either.

We push cash or check as our preferred forms of payment, but use Square and PayPal as necessary.
Reservations made online via ResKey get routed to PayPal for payment of the confirmation deposit. Most of our reservations come by e-mail or phone, though, and for those who want to use their card, we tell them we are not set up to take credit card details securely over the phone, but that we can e-mail them a link to a secure site online where they can enter their payment card details (via Square's invoicing feature -- since the user entered the card details themselves, we are charged only the "card present" fee rather than the higher "card not present" fee).
We have put in a pre-order for Square's new "chipped card" reader -- it's not free like their "mag stripe" reader, but very reasonably priced ($29) -- so we will not be assuming liability for chargebacks on chipped cards.
Our bank offers a processing service very similar to the Square, and at essentially the same rates, but I suspect they are somewhat behind Square in terms of rolling out features and capabilities (I don't think they offer the online invoicing, for example). The only advantage I could see was that we might get the money into our account a little faster (maybe). I balked when they required that we sit for an hour or two of "training" before they would activate our account....

Square up
use it on iphone or android or an ipad. done deal, bobsyeruncle, pay a % and that's that, no monthly fees, no access fee, nothing else.
If we had this when we first started, glory day!

I think Square is the winner. I like how you can send an invoice to the guest for a deposit. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and gave advice.

How does it work for deposits and partial refunds? Do they have those things worked out?
.
They are now allowing partial refunds which is better than before where it had to be the exact amount originally charged. Deposits for me are non refundable so no problems there. I just have to make sure the guests gives me the exact billing zip code and CID number if I am keying in the card manually. I don't seem to have many problem guests so I am not doing many refunds. I have never had a chargeback in 10 years either…knock on wood.

Yes you can take deposits, always have.
The partial refunds can be made now, so I have been told. I have never done this though.
And they now have advanced their method to deal with a charge back. Most processors take back the money it until such time the issue has been resolved. Square allows you to keep the money (up to a certain limit) until the issue is resolved. See the site for all the details.
