I understand we have contributors from UK, Australia and Canada. Excuse me for a moment while I discuss the upcoming US holiday.
So what do you do to mark the 4th? Party for the guests?
I will be making watermelon in star shapes with blueberries for our fresh fruit. I wish I could carve watermelon into cool shapes. Not my skill. I will also do yogurt parfaits in red, white and blue and probably berry muffins. I already have red and white flowers on the tables in vases with blue rocks.
We love the holidays. We joke about becoming "Holiday Inn." I enjoy seasonal flavors. Maybe because in New England, you need something to look forward to to get you through the winter! :)

There's a holiday on the 4th of July? I thought it was the 1st of July... today! It is today... that's why there is a parade here!

Usually try to do a red, white & blue starter. Flags on the tables. I used to have tablecloths to use but they got so best up with the blueberries I can't use them. Ref, white & blue napkins.
That's it really. The town puts on a good show so we let the guests have their own fun.
I'm not big into holidays.

Happy First of July Jon! Here in USA we are three days later. But Mexico beat both of us with Cinco De Mayo!

Mexican Independence day is September 16th. France is the 14th of July. Closest thing for the British is likely Guy Fawkes day and Scotland is St. Andrew's Day. Quebec has it's own day, St. John the Baptiste, the 24th of June, he was the patron saint of Quebec.
Cinco de Mayo is actually a celebration of a battle, not Mexican Independence day.

Yeah, but we celebrate the Cinco de Mayo over Sept 16th.

My cousin, who has a whole lot more energy than I do makes sure I keep the outside decorated seasonally. Now I have flags and bunting outside. On July 3,4 & 5 an inflatable Uncle Sam will be holding court in the front lawn.
We'll change to pumpkins and harvest and scarecrows sometime after Labor Day, Fresh pine boughs, red bows and large plastic bells and ball ornaments about Thanksgiving weekend, Also lighted deer in the yard. The greenery usually stays green til Valentine's, with our cold winters, so even though the ornaments come down sooner, greenery stays through the winter. Spring until Memorial day is artificial flowers with pastel bows along the front porch railing.
I've had many nice compliments from the townsfolk about all the decorations. Just enough there for them to notice as they speed by my place.

In Shinnston we start the Independence Day celebrations for this area. We had a great concert tonight by the Shinnston Community Band, followed by Fireworks (the best in the area). Other cities will hold fireworks and events Friday & Saturday. The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra will perform in Clarksburg on Monday. The Shinnston Lions Club put up the flags to line the main drag yesterday.
As of now, no one Friday or Saturday (but I thought last night was going to be empty - wrong). We have 2-nighter coming on Sunday. Will probably do a parfait of vanilla yogurt, red raspberries, and blueberries as a starter and do the baked oatmeal with the berries for Monday (a berry nice morning).
