What's a good sub for butter in a crumble topping for a crisp? Guest can't have dairy. Or, what's a good sub for the crumble topping altogether?

use soy margarine, or just do oats, flour, brown sugar, and some almonds mixed together and a bit of canola oil to bind it all

For the future, you can buy this stuff called "Buttery Spread" that's vegan. It works just like butter and is actually very tasty. (A vegan guest had introduced me to it.)

Gomez picked that up today. That should work well for whatever the guest needs.
.
He's on it! It's a really good product - all my vegan guests approved.

If it's available in your area, try Earth Balance. The only way I can tell the difference between that and butter is because a little less salty. A little coconut oil would work well, too.

Just noticed someone else already responded with Earth Balance--my bad!

Another great substitute - Coconut Oil.

We use it for buttery flavor on popcorn. Amazing!

This is ancient old, but I use the unsweetened applesauce measure for measure. It does work for the crumble as well as for the brown sugar & pineapple that calls for melted butter like the Baked pineapple toast. Makes it OK for Vegans for things that call for butter.
