This was the gist of a recent cancellation call. Someone who desperately needed a place to stay after canceling a stay elsewhere due to an emergency.
All of a sudden the old reservation magically became available again.
So thankful they moved on. When told where the previous rez was i know they never would have been happy here. Had I known where they booked originally I would have turned them down. Like switching your rez from the Ritz to a tent.

Oh Mort, don't be so hard on yourself. You have a lovely place and offer the kind of warm personal hospitality those "ritzy" places can't. But I do know what you mean about being relieved that you didn't have to meet that standard of service. When we get calls from folks who have always stayed at the very$$$$ resorts nearby, we shutter. With 4 restaurants on site, pools, spa, room service, bar and a gaggle of maids to serve them, the resorts make our B+B look quite humble by comparison.

Isn't that great? Imagine having to LIVE like that day after day. It would get boring. And there are SOOO many people that would be intimidated into rigidity by that. Humble? NAH! pure comfort and relaxation.

It's ok, I was joking, but you understand what I mean. ;-) Yes, we provide all the homey touches the other places can't, but someone books that other place because of the cache. So they can say they stayed there. That they can afford to stay there. (Full disclosure: I've tried to stay there. But at $250/night in the off season it's too rich for me.)

Hey, try being the first stop on your way to a one of a kind show stopper that is 1000+ a night! I've had a few of those. That's when I mention that I picked the berries that went into their jam, DH made their Canadian bacon, DH built their bedroom furniture, etc. you get the idea. I don't even pretend that I'm on the same level or attempt to compete. Just give them the BEST experience you can offer them in your humble B&B. I think most people get the difference and they're just happy to be able to chill in your pared down surroundings. I least my guests can lounge I their comfies and slippers and not worry about how they look to the high hooty patooty crowd.

Oh, gee. I want to stay at that place, too. (More so than the one near me.) I got all excited until I saw the prices. However, I'd like to come to stay with YOU to see the ice berg parade! Someday.

We are often on the circuit with the FS and that is about what they charge. Even with our rate increase in 2016, they are 66% more expensive than us. We do exactly what you do. We make sure they know that that we built the place ( about 70%), that it's the dream project, that we made our own sausage, and that we are an experience that the very expensive place cannot offer. Most of our guests go away happy to have had a chance to experience both. They see us as a different kind of 5 star property.

Speaking of icebergs....
We had one stuck behind the house a couple of weeks ago and we saw that it was breaking up a little. So, we drove around the bay, DH climbed down a very steep embankment and snagged a nice chunk of bergie bit. Plunked it in a Rubbermaid tote and put it in our freezer. We've been offering our guests some ice to put in their drinks. It's really neat. The ice crackles as it melts because of the oxygen in the ice (freshwater by the way). They love it! They've been taking pictures of themselves, Facetiming and taking videos of them drinking with it. It's little things like this that our guests remember, and I'm sure all of us do something different and special for our guests. It's our personal touch

Ok, it's AUGUST and you have an iceberg stuck behind the house??? I may have to cross this off as a place to retire. ;-) I think NS or NB will be as 'far out' as I can take.

Hahaha. This was a little stray fella and it was about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Our forecast for tomorrow is 22C feels like 26 and sunny. Better than the heat and humidity I would get right now if I were back in Ontario. At least it's good for me!

The Ritz Place here only has 3.5 rating online.... We got a call from a desperate couple who want out of it since the staff was so rude! The wife was in tears. They drove past our place and gave us a call.
