Here is a reply email I got when I responded to the first email with dates and rates:
Am Glad to read from you again . the available date and price rate is fine by us.we are just a couple coming to stay .my details is (name deleted) road (address deleted, no street numbers provided, but "USA" stated at the end) kindly provide me with the full physical payment details to issue and send you the Certified Check.i need the name and address to mail the check to and Cell#.I will be waiting for your quick response with your full payment details, so we can proceed further to secure accommodation with you .
Weird. I told them that a check was not necessary, payment due upon arrival, and that a credit card was needed to hold the reservation. I asked for a phone number and a good time to call. No response.
Has anyone had anything similar happen?

I smell scam - send you a cheque then cancel and ask for the money back.

certified checks, checks, money orders, traveler's checks, ANYTHING can be faked these days. And by the time it is supposed to clear, you can be out the money. Of course also, the "I will send you more than you need, so please refund the difference."
I have seen several fake (large) certified checks, drawn on Canadian banks.
As said in some places "In God we trust, all others pay cash!"
If the money is not immediate and real, like credit/debit card, cash, paypal transfer, ACH, (and Bitcoin I suppose), then it is not to be trusted.

Okay. Stop for a moment and think. Why would they need your cell number to send you a cheque? CONMAN

please do not EVER respond to this kind of CRAP!!!!
YES we have all had it and know better. once you respond, they know they have a live one and will sell your email a thousand times over!
do not try to be logical and second guess this stuff. we have all been there before. learn from what we already know.
use your common sense please...the old saying still is valid. do not get taken! have you not heard vaiations of this on newsscam alert stories? versions are every where.

The sharks smell fresh blood. Get out of the water! Run. Do not look back.

They want to send you a certified check that is fake and have you deposit it, then it will be more than enough payment and they will request the difference OR they will cancel the reservation and want a refund. By the time the 'certified check' goes through all the channels you will discover that the check was no good and you will be out all that money.
It's been going on for years and they look for new owners to target. If you are curious, google certified check scam and you will see similarities.
Just delete and block from this sender.

Deleted. I figured as much. The initial email sounded relatively legitimate, just like any others I would get, so I responded to that as I would any others.

On the rare occasion that I wonder if it is legit, I will send them an email stating that I only take reservations using our online booking system and a valid credit card, with a link to our website.
It ends it all quite nicely.

exactly. That way you get the person if legit, but are not scammed if not legit.
