one of the reasons for the rise of AirBnB.
I have no problem with the $250 charge for smoking in a nonsmoking room.
Mixed feelings on the express line to get in at 10am and self checkin. No problem charging for people trying to get in early.
Not mentioned, but I do know there is a lot of resentment from guests charged wifi fee. you can get free wifi for a $50 motel room, not sure why a $250 hotel room thinks they should charge?
 
So, what creative fees can we add???
When guests balk at the price here I explain we do not charge extra for the breakfast ($10.99/personatthehotel) or for parking or for internet access or for snacks or drinks or coffee and there are no resort fees.
So if the $159 rate at the hotel sounds like a better deal, they should just go for it.
 
What I found interesting is the fee for certain rooms. for example - upper floor, first floor, near elevator (haven't figured out why one would want to be by the elevator)

We had this with 2 couples - one here and one across the road at Holi d a y inn - friends were crowing as got £10 cheaper
They had a nasty shock when they got the bill
£30 for breakfast
£10 wi-fi
£24 for parking
Doesn't look like such a good deal does it?

This am an inquiry about 2 rooms for Saturday. 'can't come Fri, works late' but they want to check in at 10am. I told her sorry that is before check out from the night before. So how early? I say noon, with a fee or if you just want to drop off bags, you can do that for free. Oh that's nice. Has to check with the others. Sounds like a no go though.

This is someone who thinks you have a hotel with a hundred rooms. Someone is bound to be gone early and someone will have cleaned the room by 10.
Someone.
 
When I've gotten calls or e-mails for early check-in and I respond back with a fee, not one person has taken it! Nope, they want something for nothing.

I have been paid the fee a number of times. And dinner was delicious.
 
Thanks for the link. I ran with it and created a blog post for our guests. It's a little more heavy-handed than my usual posts, but I was in a frenzy yesterday.

Half of our guests today arrived via train. It's good, it's bringing in way more city people who don't drive.
But, they neglect to tell us they'll need to store their bags for 10 hours, 7 of them after check out. I'm fine with it if I have time to plan. But telling me as you're ringing the bell at 11 am does not go over well.
It's now happened 3 times in less than a week.
Now I'm stuck in the house, unable to go out for dinner or anything because someone has to let them back in to get their suitcases. Maybe I need an outside storage container. One of those big tubs.
 
Now that I've finished blogging about how we don't have extra fees here, I want to implement an annoyance fee.

I hadn't thought of that - we have a large trunk by the back door which is for deliveries but could easily do for luggage and has a combination - excellent idea.
