I'm on one of those FB groups for innkeepers. An innkeeper just posted that she need some help with a situation. Apparently she has some guests in a room that are making full use of the room and she has sent them a text and an e-mail and has asked them to leave because they might be disturbing the other guests. They'd not been out of the room all day.
I would never ask a guest to leave for being 'loud'. Yes, it's a bit embarrassing, but they're not endangering anyone. Turns out the guests said that they would keep it down and really did want to stay. Geeze.

Might be? In case I got a complaint from other guests I would go to the room to speak with the guests in person and to verify the noise.
Texting? How rude. Emailing? Again, rude. This requires the innkeeper to step up and do their job. It's what we get paid the big bucks for. ;-)

If they are loud and could be affecting other guests stay, yes they should be asked to quiet down but either in person or speaking on the phone.

I've attempted to do that myself. They were loud, if I could hear them in my room, I know the people in the next room over were getting an ear full and the Ener gizer bunny had nothing on them.

Since this was very late at night I decided to call the room instead. (we have phones in each room) After several rings, no one answered but the sound stopped. Peace was returned and no one said a word about it.

Ok. Loud in that way, and for a long time, I'd call, too instead of going to the room. It would be more embarrassing to knock on the door. But I'd hesitate to interrupt just the same. It would have to be really loud and really prolonged.
I know loud guests can be heard in the living room if they are in the room near the office. I take myself off and sit elsewhere for awhile. ;-)
We were subjected to a rather rambunctious couple who broke the bed in the room next door to us. We never said anything in the morning but Gomez was upset.
Funny thing was, after they got their second wind, they were back at it again, broken bed and all.

Id go and knock - sorry but I have 10 other rooms I don't want disturbing.
Had a tricker situation in some ways - two rooms one above the other - ladies in the top room went to the toilet about every 30 mins during the night and flushed every time - toilet pipe runs in the ceiling of the room below and she hardly got a wink of sleep - how do you stop people flushing the toilet all night long? and who does that anyway? surely it would disturb the person in the room with you even more?

I would consider insulating around the pipe to muffle sounds. Any time people complain about sound, the best thing is to try and insulate the walls, floor, ceiling whatever to block sound from transmitting.

what we are going to do is redo that bathroom and put the toilet where the shower is and shower where the toilet is - have no clue why they didn't do that in the first place
This will mean we can get in a double shower and the toilet will go straight out of the outside wall instead of 2 3 meters across the floor/ceiling and then to the outside wall. = problem solved and much better layout
To be fair only time we have ever in 5 and a half years we have had a problem - but I mean who flushes the toilet every hour on the hour all night?

So, if you actually knock on the door and disturb the couple, what exactly do you say to them?! I've had this happen only once, and thank God there were no other guests so I didn't have to say anything.

I can't imagine feeling very friendly toward an innkeeper suggesting we hold it down!

And btw, I'm new on this site - I'm an Innsitter from Nebraska and happy to be joining this group.
PS I'm also on that same Facebook group and read that thread! Unbelievable!

As the guest whose own vacation/sleep/romantic encounter is being interrupted for a lengthy amount of time, how do you feel about the innkeeper who shrugs her shoulders and does nothing?
We're walking a fine line here with disturbing one couple who are over the top and ignoring the valid complaints of several other rooms.
As someone mentioned, insulate those floors and walls! But, that doesn't stop guests from opening windows or banging each other into walls. (Heaven help me, this was what I heard last weekend. Bang! Bang! Bang!)

Morticia, I recant.
Banging (not to be a pun) walls is extreme.

Yeah, I meant it both ways. ;-)

plus what they also may do is open the windows - you can hear it all over then

Is it really necessary to flush the toilet in the middle of the night, drives me to distraction, especially in the guest room above ours.

So, should leave the poop in the toilet all night?

Seriously, the best way to handle recurring annoyances is to mechanically fix the problem. Re-plumb, insulate, etc.
When someone reports a problem, there are probably 10 or 20 others who say nothing, but are unhappy anyway.
