I'm helping a new innkeeper get set up to take payments through ResKey. She got turned down by Authorize.net because she hasn't been in business long.
I know ResKey can also work with PayPal but have never tried it. I assume once they get a PayPal account set up, it will be easy to connect ResKey to the PayPal acct.
What's the user experience like when you use PayPal? Does the guest still just put their CC info into ResKey when they make the reservation, and ResKey handles the rest, or does it send the guest to PayPal to log in or enter their CC info there, then they return to the inn's website?
Also, is there a way to re-charge the same card like you can with Authorize? That is, with Authorize, ResKey takes an initial deposit when the reservation is made, then I can go in later, when they arrive, and charge the balance due to the same card without having to enter the card info again. Can a ResKey-PayPal connection work like that? Or is each new charge started from scratch?
Thanks!

We use PayPal with ResKey. After making the res via ResKey, the guest gets re-directed to a PayPal page where they make the payment arrangements (either logging in to their own PayPal account, or entering payment card details). You never see the guest's card info, and there is no way to run another charge (at least as far as I know). We collect the guests balance payment when they arrive (and If they don't arrive, the deposit is all they have at risk...).

Reskey is via paypal payments, not paypal's gateway. I have asked about the gateway but was turned down (even though it's a better gateway than authorize.net)
They get redirected to paypal to pay. They still need to pay the final amount on arrival. Or you email them a link. Nope, you can't recharge the card.

Not being able to charge the balance would be the killer for me using Paypal.

Thanks for the helpful info. PayPal also has a Square-like reader that could be used to run the card for the balance. I've tried it. Better rate than Square, but Square is a better, easier system.
Still don't have my Square chip reader but I signed up for it so it may come eventually!
I'm assuming it's not hard to refund via Paypal their deposit if they cancel within the cancellation period.

I have the PayPal Here reader, but haven't used it for a long time, because my recollection is that their rate was slightly higher than Square. Maybe that has changed?
We pretty much only use PayPal for online reservations, using Square Invoicing for e-mail/phone reservations (unless we can get them to mail a check! ;-), and Square for in-person processing.

I got my new Square gizmo weeks ago - but I DID pony up the $29. Had I known they were going to be free, I would have waited.

As I understand it, they are not free. They send it to you with no payment due, but they withhold part of your first few charges until you've paid them the $29. I signed up for it that way a few weeks ago.

On a side note, there was a big deal with fees and CC processors and large stores over the last couple years and a settlement.
If someone uses a debit card, are you paying a lower fee?

To get around the lower fees earned my processor charges a fee to accept debit cards. So, they're not losing out on this deal.

With Square or PayPal or such, Debit Cards are the same as Credit Cards

Square has 2 chip reader options:
The $29 version is similar to the swipe one they have been using except you insert the chip instead of swipe.
They also have a $49 version that does not attach to your devise. It will also accept iphone charges where the guest does not even show the card, just uses their phone to make the payment.

They have been advertising that they are free, but with a catch. You pay for it when it is shipped then you are refunded in increments based on the $ of sales with in a given set of time.

My latest notice said they were going to 'protect' the merchant who has ordered the reader even if the reader has not been shipped. I guess they are running behind in shipments.

So, how does the thing work if it is not attached? Id get that if I didn't have to attach it to anything!

Wireless, bluetooth most likely.
So you do still need to have a smartphone or tablet that is connected to the internet to make it work.

Square does not accept our debit cards, only those marked as Visa/MC. Ours are not.

True, one's debit card would have to be part of one of the big four card networks (Visa, MC, Discover, Amex) in order to process it with Square.

Ah yes, I remember now. I had it backward. I was thinking they send it free then charge the $29 over time, but it's as CH said, you pay a deposit up front and get it back over time. So it's free, sort of.
