Using Square with chip cards

I'm signed up for the new EMV reader, but now see I will need a newer Ipad or other device to be compatible. Can I just use the $29 chip and mag stripe reader on my old Ipad? The old mag stripe reader works fine on the old ipad (first gen)

Phoned Square about another issue. My old first gen Ipad will work with the $29 reader. Yay. Now I'll use the old one for meal payments and the not-yet-purchased new one for lodging.

According to this list, the answer is no. But if you log into Square and go to the Contact us tab, (M-F 6-6 PDT) you can get a customer code and phone # to talk to a rep. to verify.

I just spoke with Square CS about my needs and asked them about the ipad (first gen) use with the $29 chip reader. She told me that it should work for you.
