Anyone having problems processing credit cards that have a chip + pin? I have no problems with debit cards but cannot process credit cards that require the guest to enter their pin. The 'help' desk told me the guest was entering the wrong pin. Both guests? Both attempts? Guests with debit cards can memorize but guests with credit cards can't? Makes no sense.
I can run the card manually but not using the chip so the card itself is good. These folks today had to pay cash because the card didn't go thru on two attempts.

I have yet to get the new gizmo to work. Friday night I gave up and did a manual entry because the card would not swipe. Sunday could not get chip card to work. It DID finally swipe - I was just about to have him send me a check when it finally swiped on the last try. I am totally frustrated with it. Thank you so very much - now I know it is not just numbnutz me.

K, did you get the plug-in chip-card reader that is just a bigger version of the original square, or did you get the wireless chip-card and contact-less reader? We don't have the latter, but with the former we found that you have to really give the battery a good charge when you first get the device. Then charge it again! Also, you need to have a good network connection (wifi or cell) with your device. You have to wait until the thing has established a good connection and is ready (on my phone it displays an orange bar after I plug the device in while it it connecting, which then goes black when it is ready). Don't dip the chip card into the reader until it is ready, then slip the card in there with the chip side up (facing the logo-ed side of the device) and don't move it.

I have never had to give a pin # don't even have a clue what mine would be. never asked to set one up.

We have not yet had a chip-card that asked for a PIN, they have all run as chip-and-sign (even those from European and Canadian guests) -- we are using the Square plug-in chip card reader on our iPhones.

I got the original on steroids. I then put it away AFTER charging it. Have it back on the charger now - it shows green but I will leave that puppy on all day. I was sitting next to the router when I tried to make it work.
I thought the shiny square on the front of the card (the side that say VS or MC) was the chip so I put it into the gizmo with the stripe side facing away. I hate learning curves. Gave up and swiped the card which FINALLY worked.
WE have not been issued pin & chip or chip and sign even yet. I planned to practice on MY card.
Thank you so much for the info. The instruction booklet was printed on "fast draft" rather than bold - VERY hard to see the illustrations.

Really? I haven't had to sign for a transaction in so long. In fact in the last three years I think I had to sign ONCE... and it was a US company doing business in Canada and the employee was telling me that all day long she has to apologize to people because the company is a dinosaur.
Most of our European guests are C&P. There are a few in Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand that have to sign when outside the country. But almost everyone from Germany and France are C&P, no signature.

I think you need to talk to your processor. It should come back instantly. And if it gets refused, it should say "bad PIN" or something like that one the transaction.
Ask your processor if you need to do a software update on your machine.

I am just wondering whether it might be a function of the software on our end.

If a card is not accepted I get a code, that's it. Then I have to look up what the code means, but I don't have that handy. This is the second time it's happened and both times I got a string of codes that I assumed meant something to the processor. They didn't want to know.
Her take was I could do a software update. Just to shut me up because it takes two HOURS to finish. Was not getting into that last night. It will have to wait until we're quiet again.

The battery does have to be well charged for it to work.
I think maybe the shiny spot you are referring to is a holographic image used to verify the card in the old days. The chip is metallic bronze/gold/silver and has a geometric pattern to it.

Absolutely NOT. It's a function of the card issuer, entirely.

Yearly. It's that time right now but I have nothing to switch to again this year.
When I explained to the snippy person on the phone that hand entering worked but that it was a lot more expensive she said, 'Well, I guess it depends how much you want to make the sale.'
So, yeah, annoy me RIGHT when it's time to sign up again.

Are you a member of the Cost Club? If you are, call Elavon and ask them for a rate quote. Or call Mercury for a rate quote. Or of course... ask them to go on to month to month. After a contract is over, they should be able to come up with better excuses.

It is the phone/iPad thing that keeps you from Square isn't it. That would hold you over until you could decide on something.

She has an android tablet. She can do that at any time. But the percentages with Square are quite high.

Simply. Yes. I don't have anything Square plugs into. Of course, I could sign up with one of those automatic systems that goes thru the rez system. But, I've had a bit of a frenetic year so I'll deal with it next time around.
