I got a notice from Amazon today that they're discontinuing Amazon Register. That's their version of "Square" for processing charge cards via the smartphone or tablet. I'd used Square, but switched to the PayPal system because it gave a slightly better rate. But I found the PayPal software was a bit buggy so when Amazon Register came out I switched to that (all these systems are free, so easy to switch around).
Register's reader is larger than Squares, so it's easier to slide the card without the card "rocking" and require a re-swipe. The Amazon Register software is very good. I'm sure they're discontinuing it because it's not profitable enough to support developing a chip reader.
Amazon also shut down their hotel booking site, Amazon De.stinations, just a few months after they launched it. They don't stick with things very long!

Yes, we got that today, too. We are so disappointed since we love it..... Yes, I think it was because of the chip reader too. What do you suggest we go with now?

I've been unhappy with Square. All my AMEX transactions get declined. I then process on my standard system and they are accepted. So today I get the local competitor. Just waiting for the new reader. And the reason why Square dropped it's rate by .10% around here.

Maybe that's why they quit! Amazon would process Amex and then Amex would refuse the money because of some stupid reason. The two As would fight it out and a month or two later Amazon would give us the money. It got to the point the help desk would say, "Let me guess was the card from AMEX?" I would always groan inward when I saw that the guest was holding an Amex card. So that might be the reason your amex cards get declined through Square....

I have not had trouble collecting on Amex with Square, but any refunds back to my customers using Amex have been hugely delayed in showing up in my customers' accounts (and not on my end or Square's, but at the other end...).

I'll probably go back to Square. I think the deal on that is they give you the chip reader, but hold back some from your first few charges, until they've been paid $25 or so for the reader. It had better work!

I think it's the other way around, you pay for it and they rebate you the charges until it's free. Not that they offer it here... where we are all C&P.

OK, that's twice I've gotten it backwards. At least I'm consistent. Just can't believe it's free!!

The plug-in one that is like the original but larger is not free, it is $29.95. The wireless Contact-Less one is free only if you do enough business in the first 3 months that the fees you would pay offset the ~$50 purchase price...

Anyone contact Moneris USA about Payd? It's apparently available in the US, they just don't have a fancy website set up.
