I have come across a Facebook B&B group thread where one Innkeeper (he may be around these parts also) is boasting about messaging a negative reviewer of another B&B is his area. The conversation is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/bedandbreakfasts/permalink/919792828076395/ but I'll copy and paste it below. Is this sort of thing common over the pond? I find it in incredibly bad taste to do such a thing (as I told the OP over on FB)...

If you don't like my posts Copperhead you might find it easier to add my username to your ignore list. What I copy and pasted here the Innkeeper himself put up onto a public Facebook group which is indexed by Google et al. It is he, not I, who has put this into the public domain.

Different group. The one listed here is open, not closed. You can join but you can read without joining.
On that note, I think the poacher was out of line.
We had an innkeeper who used to do that with guests who were happy we they were! But he would tell them all the things he did better. My guests asked me if i knew he was doing that as they felt very protective of me.
He would approach random people, chat them up, ask where they were staying and then say they should try his place next time they were in town because he had this and that.

On that note, I think the poacher was out of line.

Wow. I have never heard of that sort of thing happening here. Are you in a competitive area where there are more rooms than guests to fill them? It seems like the sort of behaviour that would gain enemies rather than friends and who knows when you might need to call in a favour from a nearby Innkeeper?

Haha, good point! Your secrets are safe with me Copperhead I swear! :D I think I could screenshot the FB conversation easily enough and replace the copy and paste with that to keep the Google bots from seeing it but I seem to be unable to edit my post!
 
Wish this was posted on the far more vocal Closed BB FB group...Jim the Jerk would be royally skewered there for his actions...on multiple levels re Innkeeper Code of Conduct. Geesh, there are only 3 BBs in town. Can't believe he has the audacity to brag publically about his poaching and disrespect those who enforce their policies.
 
Long and short - very bad form
If I take a regular from a neighbor I make sure they know to go back their ie tell them they get a special rate from X for being such as good customer etc and that I was only matching it as a special favor to them. Also I would not be bragging about never enforcing my policies! the whole point is that at least they think you will or try to! I do my best to resell and only charge the difference which most people are happy with - but as people have said previously the bank manager would prefer that I pay my bills!
 
Open group. Bad form. Frankly the good will he may gain will also get him the flakes who cancel all the time, now that they know he doesn't enforce.

Yes and no. In season there aren't enough rooms, off season there are way too many. This innkeeper was a doozy. He moved his pin on Google maps to look like he was across the street from me when he was a 1/4 mile away.
I stopped referring to him when I was full. So, yes, maybe he poached a few guests but he lost respect and referrals.

Wow. I have never heard of that sort of thing happening here. Are you in a competitive area where there are more rooms than guests to fill them? It seems like the sort of behaviour that would gain enemies rather than friends and who knows when you might need to call in a favour from a nearby Innkeeper?

Yes and no. In season there aren't enough rooms, off season there are way too many. This innkeeper was a doozy. He moved his pin on Google maps to look like he was across the street from me when he was a 1/4 mile away.
I stopped referring to him when I was full. So, yes, maybe he poached a few guests but he lost respect and referrals.

I love the support we get from other innkeepers in town. We pool our resources for marketing including ads in select magazines and we have a collective website. Referrals are important to us as the town can fill up. We even keep an on line spread sheet of availability. We don't poach. People who do are not nice.

Well, it was all kinds of wrong. And basically told the world that they could book and cancel and he won't charge them. A great way to find the abusers of the world.

On that note, I think the poacher was out of line.
We had an innkeeper who used to do that with guests who were happy we they were! But he would tell them all the things he did better. My guests asked me if i knew he was doing that as they felt very protective of me.
He would approach random people, chat them up, ask where they were staying and then say they should try his place next time they were in town because he had this and that.

The innkeepers in Venice seemed to do a lot of this since they are in a high volume situation. We went through a couple of different networks to find our spot, which we may not have found on our own.
