Our city's population is 250,000. The powers that be have decided that Public Health Inspections of short term rentals, B and B's, etc. will only be inspected if there is a complaint. In other words---complaint driven. Also a business license will be issued to new businesses without having to go through all the zoning by law approvals, cost and time associated with it, usually 1200 dollars.. A business license is $150.00. I am not sure if that is every year or just a one time deal. As of today there are 140 rooms listed on air, some licensed, six licensed B and B's have closed their doors and six remain. The remaining one's business is down about half or more.. Huummm!

A sad state of affairs Charlie. Six good business gone.
Will be interesting to find out if the Air's even get Business Licenses or will split under the radar of your city officials.

There aren't too many people in the govt around here who think this is an important topic. Our governor only wants high paying jobs and I doubt would care if every mom and pop shop in the state closed until the tax revenues disappeared because the entire state is mom and pop shops.
The whole state has reinvented itself after every major industry went overseas. Everyone I know runs their own small business or works for a very small business.

It is sad that the ones that obeyed the laws and did things above board are the ones that are suffering. Not only did they pay the $1200 (or so) for obtaining the proper zoning, they are also hit with higher insurance and property taxes all which takes more income to pay and the reason why their rates are what they are. The fly by nights don't pay all that and can charge minimal rates.

While this burns me up, I know that the gov agencies who regulate this do not have the man power to enforce the regulations when it gets to that degree. It is happening to the big tourist city near me as well with over 1000 listings on air.

They've always been about money. It's a billion dollar industry, why should air get 100% of the pie?

The majority of people who are employed in the US work for small businesses. the major factories of yesteryear are either off-shore or use robots
