I have an Ipad 2 and iphone 4. The new square chip reader - due to be shipped to me soon - is not compatible with the ipad edition I have. Rather than upgrade a device that I am happy with and works well, I am considering the $141 to Paypal for their chip card reader, which apparently will work with the ipad edition I have. I know they refund most of the purchase price if $3K run inside of 3 mos, but this time of year that likely is not happening. I'll keep square for Amex, but year end seems a good time to make this switch if I am going to do it. i have paypal anyway but have not used their card reader.
The paypal purchase would be less than a new device purchase. If others feel square's reports are more useful than paypal's that would be a tipping point to stay with what I have and just purchase the new i-device.

But a new device gives you a ton more feaures and usability for other areas of your life. Maybeyou can deduct it as a busines expense. And you can make ipad videos, photos, social media updates, all of which you can't paypal can't do. You would gie yoursel more memory, fastr speed and a much better experience.
iPads were made to be upgraded, that is why they add so may new and greater features on newer versions.
If you haveit and it works, why not just use the iphone4?

Iphone 4 only works with old reader. Plus guests like much more the large signing area on the ipad. I admit I'm tempted by the decent megapixels on the new ipad, partly for just that reason - social media. I know there have been positive comments abt the Paypal readers, but I didn't find that thread in search.

This page says iPad 2 IS compatible with the Square chip reader if you've installed iOS 7 or above.

Arks - It will work with one of the chip readers but would need the stand with the USB connection for the contactless reader. I don't really want the stand.
For the last three guests I had to manually key in the number for Square. Wouldn't recognize the chip OR the mag stripe. Previous to that I took a chip card and all was well. I've rebooted and spent some non quality time with ISP over slow connection which MAY have been the culprit.
Will try it again with next guest.

You have to keep the battery for the chip reader charged. If it has been a while since you last charged, try charging it up first and then see if it will accept a card.

I am an idiot. I put the charging cable in with the readers right on the front desk - when the charger arrived. Several weeks ago, I picked up the charger and thought "Who put their charger here accidentally?" Not until your post did it click.
I get today's dunce cap award.

Usually the limit on the contactless is $100. Are you really processing that small an amount?
