Our esteemed member from WV sent me a surprise package with Black Walnuts after I commented on not being able to get them and a recipe in a Southern Pie book that I wanted to try. My recipe called for 1 cup of walnut pieces chopped..... I spent more than an hour on my feet trying to figure out how to crack those damn shells (answer... vice grip... they withstood a nut cracker and a hammer.) Maybe next time I'll be more specific and ask for shelled black walnuts!
The pie is cooling. Serving some as mini tarts to guests in the morning. Still have half of them left to crack, but not sure I have the patience. :)

I TOLD you Himself uses his vice to crack them. Anything from West Virginia (or anyone) has to be strong enough to survive - nuthin' comes easy here.

haha. MIL had a black walnut tree. DH taught me to use vise grips.

Well, finally got them cracked. :) Didn't realize how hard they were.

.
Himself still has about half a container left to crack. He does a couple at a time - he cannot stand at the vise longer than that any more.
