Hoo boy,
I think I really messed up. I have read until my eyes have crossed on this forum, everything I could find about building a bed and breakfast website. I have built several other business websites but never one for a B&B - AND, I have never used wordpress. So -- I purchased my domain through godaddy and after reading here, but apparently missing a critical detail -- I purchased the wordpress.COM business package 299/yr -- thinking I could use the custom themes (in particular I wanted to look at themeforest). Imagine my shock when I realized that .com and .org are entirely different and that I can't even get custom themes on wordpress.com. Arghhhhh!
So now I have to make a decision. Do I ask for a refund and head over to the wordpress.org - or can I make a decent site that will work for my needs on wordpress.com?
I don't know how to write code at all. I DO want to manage my own site though and make changes when I see fit and as often as I see fit.
Does anyone have their sites hosted on wordpress.com? Have you found themes that work well?
Alternatively, can a person who doesn't know code or CSS get around ok with a custom theme on wordpress.org?
...and I need an emote that is banging his head against the wall!

Yes, it's confusing. I registered my domain at godaddy, clicked in the godaddy admin panel to have it install WordPress for my site (it's free), then found a WordPress Theme I like at ThemeForest, bought it for $45 and installed it on my site and started building. Really there's not much interaction at all with WPcom or WPorg.

Ohhhhh, that sounds too easy! Do you need coding skills to host yourself?

.
Not really need much coding with Wordpress, but with some.

I wouldn't use Go dad dy...but if you must, you paid way too much. You don't need to mess around with wordpress.com /org
Wordpress is available via their install in the admin panel. Get your money back.
Lots of themes can be downloaded in the actual Wordpress for free..but my suggestion would be to buy your own theme because the freebies usually aren't going to do what you want and you need to custom code and very little support. Don't count on Go dad to give you much of that for WP.
Suggestions for theme: Striking Multiflex, Enfold or Avada. You can purchase theme at Themeforest.net

I am using Arks quote as my exact quote.
Did the same and also godaddy because we were already tied in with them on multiple sites for years and they work for us.
Find a template you like for a B&B site and buy that one, or similar. And you already know there is no need for a mobile website, those are now obsolete...a responsive design is what you need.
Word of advice: EmptyNest here knows her stuff re b&b webdesign using wordpress, so when she speaks I listen.

After much hair pulling ALL DAY LONG yesterday, I am back to where I was when I got out of bed yesterday -- at square one:
1. I "tried" to get my domain name transferred from homestead back to gopoppy (because I wanted to own my domain) - homestead sent me the authorization code but is not releasing it - for some reason. (Will need to call them again.) This may be a blessing in disguise as the domain is not currently hosted anywhere (well except homestead where I am trying to move it from).
2. After signing up for wordpress.com and realizing they were not what I wanted - I asked for a refund.
3. I want to use a themeforest theme. I "thought" I understood that it would need to be hosted somewhere and that 1 and 1 was a good place. So - I signed up for webhosting there - and tried again to have my domain transferred there. This time it may have worked - until I received an email from 1 and 1 informing me that when I authorized the transfer of the domain to their site, I would be turning ownership of the domain over to them (!!!). Whaaaaa??? Ummm...I don't think so...
4. Furthermore, after looking around 1 and 1 (I purchased the 1 & 1 Managed Wordpress Plus hosting package) I see I am back where I was with Wordpress.com -- I (apparently) cannot use themeforest themes.

I feel soooo dumb. (No, really!) This can't be this hard!
Emptynest -- will you take me by my dumb little hand and walk me step by step through where to have my domain registered so I can still own it, and where to have a themeforest theme hosted
(thinking I will change my screen name to "duh".)

My domain is purchased through and hosted by 1 and 1. I OWN it but have it on auto-renew so I can never lose it - it is billed to my cc. Swirt told me to go there, so I did. To find out who actually owns the domain name, do a whois.com search, That will tell you.

If you want 1and1 call them. Ask how to transfer domain but leave ownership in your hands. They will help you do it. If they don't, then it's not the right host for you.

Ok -- I called 1 and 1 and they basically told me that the email they sent me is not really to be taken as I took it (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain?). They said I would still own the domain and the email was referring to where it used to be hosted. They assured me they would just be hosting it but I would continue to own it Hmmm....ok, whatever. Since they have a good reputation with those "in the know" and Gillum's registry verifies that is how her's is set up -- I'm gonna just go with it.
My next mistake was signing up for the 1&1 Managed WP Plus package as indeed -- you cannot use theme companies other than the few they offer. Exactly the same issue I had at WP.com.
They switched my account over to their Webhosting Pro package, and got me all set up where I can upload any theme I want.

Whoooo hoooooo!!! I'm off to a day of shopping at the theme stores!!!
I can't thank you guys enough for all of the time you so generously give (on top of your crazy-busy schedules) to help a newby-in-need. Has anyone told you lately that ya'll are awesome? I feel so privileged to be part of this wonderful group of people!

Sounds like you got the situation cleared up. So 1 and 1 is fine. Now just get your theme purchased. If you need help. let me know.:)

You can purchase theme at Themeforest.net.

Martha we think you are awesome. You found a new home here with us, we have all been through it, and more to come.

My domain is purchased through and hosted by 1 and 1. I OWN it but have it on auto-renew so I can never lose it - it is billed to my cc. Swirt told me to go there, so I did. To find out who actually owns the domain name, do a whois.com search, That will tell you.
.
whois.com has me listed both as the registrant name and the admin. This is the email (with my domain name removed) I received from 1 and 1:
If you approve this transfer request, "yourdomain.com" will
transfer in ownership from yourself to the party mentioned above. You
will no longer own the domain, nor pay any future registration fees to
your current registrar.
If you do not wish to transfer your domain.com to the party
mentioned above, simply disregard this e-mail and the request will void
itself after 12-Jan-2016.
.
The will take a better mind than mine. Lawyer-speak. I have no clue what the response you got means but I copied the below from whois
Domain Name: XXXXXXXX.COM

Ok -- I called 1 and 1 and they basically told me that the email they sent me is not really to be taken as I took it (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain?). They said I would still own the domain and the email was referring to where it used to be hosted. They assured me they would just be hosting it but I would continue to own it Hmmm....ok, whatever. We were ALL newbies once. I started before Internet and Forums with "on the job" training (but worked as a relief night auditor for about 10 years part-time which was everything from manager to reservations) and we (I) strive to help newbies get it right in the beginning so they do not fail themselves OR the innkeeping industry. (One bad B & B or innkeeper and people swear off B & Bs but will still go to hotels after a bad experience)

FWIW, I have read a lot of advice suggesting NOT having your domain name registered with the same outfit that you use to host your website -- that way if you ever run into trouble with your hosting service, you can get a new hosting account somewhere else and then go to your domain name registrar and point your domain to your new hosting account, lickety split. If you have your domain name registered with the same outfit that is hosting your site, then they have you by the short hairs (so to speak). Personally, I am using Dynadot.com from most of my domain names (I inherited a domain that is registered with Network Solutions, though -- been meaning to transfer....), and am currently using HostGator for hosting. Also, if the domain owner has signed up for the registrar's privacy service, a whois lookup won't tell you much about the owner....

I've read that too and it certainly makes sense. I cancelled my transfer to 1 and 1 out of necessity because I changed services from the managed service to just the hosting service. That will take a couple of days for the cancellation to go through. When it does, I think I will have my domain registered elsewhere. The email they sent me about giving up my ownership (even if I am taking it wrong) still kinda sticks in my craw.

AM, I built my own website using Wordpress. I used Bluehost then went from there. Like Arks, I found a theme I like then built from there. There is a learning curve to it, but there are a ton of YouTube videos and tutorials (I read several books from Amazon that were cheap).
As for the coding and CSS, I have no clue. But I went to Elance (now Upwork) and hired a free lance web designer to handle the stuff I didn't know. When I posted a job, one of the requirements is that the guy show me what he did. I learned a lot for very little money. They always do more than what I ask because they get more jobs when I post a good review. I still hire out of Upwork for small things that I'm not sure about. It's great.
The link is in my signature, if you wanna take a look.

Thank you Chris,
Your website is beautiful - and so is your inn! It looks like ya'll have a blast there! I have really enjoyed your input on this forum -- and Shelley's recipes!
I think I've found the theme I want - and I have a thumbs up on it from Empty Nest. I'll post some updates as I dive in.

Looks like you're about 4 hours down the highway from us. We may have to plan a weekend in Mountain View!
