BEWARE! Two unlawful men booking rooms at inns!
REDACTED was recently the victim of two scam artists. The men reserved two rooms through Booking.com for a same-day check-in -- but used an invalid credit card and a disconnected phone number. The staff made every attempt to contact the guests before they checked in but couldn't obtain valid payment. Upon arriving at the property, the men made excuses as to why they could not provide a valid card number (in hindsight, it was most certainly a rehearsed act), but since one claimed he was feeling ill, the inn gave him a room in good faith. In the morning, both rooms were trashed and the men were gone.
REDACTED did some outstanding detective work on social media and through booking.com, and was able to identify the men, contact the owner of the stolen credit card, and alert the police. The men have multiple arrests and both have outstanding warrants. It's possible they're choosing independently-owned lodging (like ours) because we're less likely to turn them away. Booking.com has started fraud investigation.
PLEASE be more aware of same-day bookings though OTAs, and make sure the credit card processes before providing keys or other access to your properties. And if something doesn't feel right about a guest, do your research (Facebook is a valuable investigative tool!) Be safe out there!!

we have had a similar situation - lady who has in actually fact stayed with us and paid though last time left owing 2 nights (kept adding on then disappeared) basically keeps booking bb's then not paying, disappearing etc - we all know her and keeps using real name on Boo ing.c om bookings.
Problem is for example today booking was made at one of my neighbors - they knew the name so flagged up to B - they said run the card - card doesn't run - whole mess about to get the booking cancelled - etc Its why its important to keep up with your local trade associations - keeps up the warnings!

Another good reason not to fall for the OTA push to do same day bookings.
B.com also pushes the no guest details or CC# - I can not see why any property should do this.

I've gotten a lot of bad cards from there lately. If you report it on their system, you get back a 'scare' message that implies if you proceed with your silly need for a valid card the guest may opt to cancel and stay elsewhere.

Yeah, they can kiss my ____ if they think I'm going to accept that.

Don't want people whose cards don't work! duh! just don't want my inventory held up with them!

I have had issues in the past with bad B.com cards. No more. I run them the morning of arrival, and if it doesn't work they never see the inside of my rooms.
Unfortunately, if they're a no-show, I usually can't run the card and have tied up the room. I have a list of 3 credit cards from the last 6 months' no shows that I run every week just on the off chance one might suddenly turn good. No luck so far.
