'We' have read and discussed this issue many times.

Guests really do feel like they are our only guests! I could go on and on about one room this last weekend but instead I want to share this phone call from this AM from a booked guest:
Me: Hi Copperhead B&B
Guest: we have reservations for Sunday and have determined that we will get in earlier than expected so would like to check in on Saturday instead.
Me: sorry but we are completely booked for Saturday (yada yada about the area being packed & provided advise where to look)
Guest: "you mean that someone is staying in the room Saturday, the room we are checking into on Sunday?"
Me: We do look forward to meeting you at 3pm on Sunday, if you have.....
Interrupted by the phone going dead.
After shaking my head, I busted into laughter.

So is that a cancellation?
Or do you think they will still show up on Sunday? ;-)

They did not cancel! Must use the words with me to be labeled a cancellation.
Will they show? Don't know but most likely yes as I have their money, this is the biggest event period of the year here. Cancel date is 30 days, pay in full. So regardless the green is mine!

They're likely shocked that the room can be cleaned so quickly. :)

I always forget when we get slow you go!
Here's to a sane busy season for you, and some great guests to make it all worthwhile.

Another chuckle for the day.
Call this am from someone who booked via OTA for V Day weekend.
They saw that we do not allow candles but wondered SINCE it is a romantic weekend for Valentines weekend if they could bring A FEW if they were the jar type.
I said that the only candles allowed were the flameless type with batteries.
I guess the candles know it is Valentines Day and therefore will not burn my house down.

I put low/wide multi-wick jar candles like below by each jet tub a few months ago. Glued one of my cheap cork logo coasters to the bottom so it won't get too hot if the thing burns all the way down. The coaster sticks out about an inch past the candle in every direction, so they also can't get it too close to the wall. So far people are using them and no problems at all.

The PO's did that - had those big jar candles in all the rooms. So we kept up the tradition. Until 2 months in when someone fell asleep and the candle burned down far enough to smoke enough to set off the smoke alarm.
End of candles.

Sorry but I would never leave a candle for a guest to burn particularly in a situation like yours where you don't live there and can't do a room tidy to check on things. Only battery operated candles used

Everybody has to find their own comfort level. Since I'm not there, really no way to stop them from doing whatever they want, anyway. I can punish them after the fact by charging them for damage (has never happened), but they're gonna do what they're gonna do.
At least the jar candles make it less likely they'll use candles that drip. If I had an ancient wooden house, I'd worry more about fire. But with my building, behind all the thick fireproof gypsum board you'll only find non-flammable insulation, then concrete or brick. No wood. The metal ceilings are 13 feet tall. Really not much there that will burn. And the hard-wired smoke detectors call the fire department immediately if there's smoke detected. And the building has a sprinkler system. So I don't worry about it.

wanna live in your building. :)
around here, everything is wood and most houses are old, many made by non professionals for their own families. I always have a small, quiet, behind the scenes fear of fire.
