Another great, short piece by Seth
The work of a professional isn't to recreate thrills. It's to show up and do the work. To continue the journey you set out on a while ago. To make the change you seek to make in the universe.
Thrilling is fine. Mattering is more important.

I may be straying a bit from his thoughts but I might add that we can lose sight of what we're offering because we are so busy getting it done .. and need to step back and see that this visit, the sights around your place, that breakfast you're making and serving for the thousandth time, is NEW to your guest and wonderful. I think when I made the 1000th Belgian waffle of the season and plated it with fresh fruit on the side, whipped cream I made myself and sizzling sausage links ... the guest exclaimed 'Oh, this is so wonderful!'
Is it? I thought. So when all the guests were served and gone away, I let the dishes sit and I plated one up just for me and sat at the window looking out over the harbor. And took a big bite. Was it wonderful? Yes, yes it was.

Exactly! We have an ocean view from our breakfast room. The most sincere reactions we get are people who arrive in the dark and see it first thing in the morning. They don't have that view in Ohio, or NYC or most places in the world.
We offer something special and it is new to them.
Great insight.

What a wonderful post. I sat at the gas fire this morning with coffee, Cook's Illustrated and a cat nearby. Yes it was wonderful. Hopefully I'll remember this in August :)

we have a lady staying who after many years of staying with a particular lady in london (BB) they considered her a friend - made her a platinum disk with 2000th breakfast on it all framed as a gift aparently she loved it and it hangs in her hall today even though she is now retired at 92 years old!

I still get excited about getting a reservation. It means someone else has found my City (and me) and I get to try to "knock their socks off".

My DH likes to sit in front of his iPad screen and look at all the reservations. Then, he goes onto the competition's site to see if they've been reserved for the same time, if they're full, empty, etc. He gets so excited when he realizes that someone chose us first, not because someplace else has been booked up.

Each day I enter the kitchen with a sense of passion and excitement because each day I am going to make a difference in someone's life. Each plate that leaves our kitchen leaves with passion.
