My town just handed out its first ever year round liquor license! AND just change the law to allow glasses of alcohol to be sold without a meal!
We are a sleepy, summer only town that has only allowed alcohol sales in restaurants for about 6 or 7 years. And only if you are seated at a table and ordering a meal.
When the town changed to allowing liquor sales after over 100 years of dry-ness, the opposition was afraid that the opening of the door would lead to bars, liquor stores, tattoo parlors, biker bars, drunkenness and all types of tom-foolery.
So now, we have gone past step one and we will allow year round liquor and bars!!! Tattoo parlors are next. Maybe I should see about getting a license. Part of a package? drink and ink?

to be fair the tattoo industry has revolutionized itself - had a big conference here was really interesting - all the technology etc
However the tattoo place we have nearby told us his business is 50% putting them on and 50% taking them off - bought a tattoo removal machine and it paid for itself in 6 months!

We don't have a bar bar in town. I wonder if there are rules? Every bar is in a restaurant.

The law changed here several years ago so the patron could take the remains of his bottle of wine purchased with his dinner up to his room - not home, up to his room.
We are now in year 2 of trying to get the Brunch Bill as it is being called passed. No beer or wine sales before 1 PM on Sunday is the current rule. They want to be able to serve people a bloody Mary or a Mimosa or whatever with the Sunday brunch. It would also allow wineries and the small distilleries to be open for the "on their way home stop to buy a bottle of wine" people. This year I think it will pass.

We do hate telling guests, "Welcome, hope your drive was easy because you now have to get back into your car and go back 5 miles to the nearest open restaurant."

That is the charm of your place! If I do say so myself. Only 4 miles to the closest restaurant here.

Beachie, what you will see is that now all the chain restaurants will be beating down the real estate offices eyeing the best commercial spots.

I've been watching a small town near us that was dry drastically change over the last couple of years. Many of the chains have already built or at least have signs on prime real estate saying future site of _____ .
Bars. Bars were already near by ... just across the county line!

Chains are taking over my town. They're everywhere now. A pottery store just closed - dominos is moving in. There's no parking on that street except for the tiny church lot.
I mentioned it to someone else and got, "thank goodness, pizza delivery!" Sigh.

The town has an ordinance prohibiting neon signs. So far, it has kept McD's away.
We have Dunkin Donuts, a Cumberland Farms and a Rite Aid. That's it for chains unless you count Black Dog. Which I guess is a chain, but a cute one.

Of course, my town IS one big chain store, but I would rather have lots of little local restaurants. And, yes, I know this is a locally owned chain, but still.

The McDonald's in Morticia's town is in a traditional-looking white clapboard building, no big golden arches...

Most photographed McD's in the country. The tables and chairs inside in the dining room are real wood. The parking lot is required to have shrubs around to block it from view. (Which the latest owner ripped out and was forced to replant.) It has a flower garden. Until recently the drive up was not allowed to have a speaker. And they serve lobster rolls in the summer. (Boy, if that doesn't narrow down where I live!)

No chain stores allowed here...including restaurants. Dunkin' d's was allowed under heavy protest because they do not make any of their food on-site. Apparently they truck the donuts in every morning.
you might find that having a few bars in town livens up the night life and brings a younger crowd to your place.

Anything that happens with a drink stronger than Coffee and MtDew is usually regretted is my experience from volunteering at the local jail. (95% of them it is related to drugs and drinks.)

We were there in 1986 - and loved that it was that way.

Biggest complaint about my entire state is there is no nightlife. It's the perfect spot for me now, I would have hated it 45 years ago.

Please do not mention lobster rolls in the context of McD. Actually, please do not mention lobster rolls at all – it's the one thing I really miss moving away from New England. But today, I am headed into town to buy Dungeness crab, almost as good. Maybe I'll get a hot dog bun and make the PNW equivalent.
