Just got a new card processor, new company. Test drove it this weekend, works great. However, it came preprogrammed with the option for the guest to add a tip is a $amount or %. Does anyone else have this on their processor? I didn't on my last one. I never noticed when I processed the transaction because the screen just tells you to hand the device to the customer after you enter the total amount.
Mind you, it worked pretty good, lol. Three out of five guests tipped but now that I'm thinking about it, I'd hate to think they felt obligated to tip.
I called customer service to have it changed but I was on hold and kept getting interrupted. So, I'll just do it tomorrow.
What's everyone's thoughts on this? Do you use this function? Do you think it's tacky? Haven't seen a thread on this and I looked for one but couldn't find one on this subject.

I do know some have it as they mention taking payment at checkout so guests can leave a tip or pay for extras using their credit card.
We don't have it. To me it's awkward as you, the guest, don't expect it and the innkeeper is standing right there.
But, you've gotten tips you might not have.
Do you accept payment at check-in or check-out? If check-in I'd vote to remove that option.

I do payment at check out. I have little address books and daytimers that I sell plus, we do a crab supper that some opt for because we can do that one in a couple of hour's notice.
Now, I have had guests in the past ask if they could tip at check out. When one guest found out he couldn't, he actually got in his car and drove to the nearest bank. That made me feel bad and I wish I had that option at that time.

or you can enter over it before you hand the terminal to the guest - we don't have it at ours but a lot of the restaurants do and if you say you are tipping cash that's what they do so know its possible

I could do that. If I enter '0' for the tip, then hand it over to the customer--if they ask about adding a tip, I can always cancel the transaction and do it over again and then hand it to them. Do you think that would work Jcam?

I've been here 10 years and I can count on one hand the number of guests who have asked about tipping.
We don't do dinners, tho, so it could be what you're offering. If you see the positive then keep the option!

yup that would do it or sometimes it says tip Y or N and just press no

I'll have to call and see if they can do that. The Y or N option.

Do you have a gratuity envelope in your rooms? If so, I would remove the uncomfortableness of the tip line on the processor.

It's optional. Have your processor reprogram your keypad. You can usually ask for it to ask for a tip (Y/N) or have it entirely not asked.

Now try and get tech support. I was on hold for almost an hour and a half while I cleaned away. Now I have other stuff that needs my attention. Why is nothing easy?

When you signed up with this processor, did you get an account rep? You probably didn't call tech support for that. ;-)
Call the account rep and say it was set up wrong and you want the rep to straighten it out. That wait time is usually less.

Is it a holiday today for you? Or just NS?

No holiday. We already have more holidays than any other province. I don't think this government can afford another.

As a guest/patron it doesn't phase me. I've seen so many of these processors hooked up to cellphones and tablets, a lot have the tip option. If it's something I want to tip for, I do. If it isn't, I don't. I don't feel pressured just by seeing it.
If you want it off there - work to get it removed - but I wouldn't scramble and I wouldn't worry about it.
I work for a non profit. We use square at our functions and sales and I noticed the tip option ... no one so far decided to "tip". And they didn't ask about it. Like me, I think many people are used to seeing it. I guess I could look into disabling it somehow. In future.
Just my two cents

With Square, you can configure whether you want it to provide space for a tip yourself, in the settings.
(But not on a transaction by transaction basis, I don't think. We collect payment on arrival, and don't have ours set to ask for a tip.)
