So, I'm enjoying a hot cocoa and a scone at the local coffee joint. Woman at the next table is talking to someone about a job interview.
She finishes with her call, looks at me and says, "it's so hard to find a job. I don't know where they got my resume from. It's not a job I know how to do but you have to apply for everything."
She went on like that for awhile telling me there were no jobs out there.
She essentially gave me her resume in the ten minutes she talked non stop to me.
Being the good, helpful citizen I am I told her about 3 jobs that fit what she wants to do. Asked her had she checked them out. Apparently they wouldn't even talk to her.
So I then mentioned a few other places where she could look online for local jobs. "They won't have anything." How about Craigslist? "That's no good."
Everything I told her about where I KNOW local business owners list their openings she either said there were no jobs on there or looked at me like she'd never heard of those organizations (after working in town here for 15 years) .
And everything I said was interrupted to tell me how hard it is to find a job. (She also kept interrupting the person who called her for the interview.)
A big, online home goods retailer is opening a call center here. Supposedly real jobs with benefits. No, she didn't want to do that.
I gave up. But if she finds my job listing there's no way I could work with her.

What she means is "It's so hard to GET a job"! With her lack of listening skills or follow through, it is no wonder she has not been hired. Someone like that needs a personal counselor to point out their weak points and work with them to improve their communication skills.

Most people want a job. Few people want to work..
Some good luck here. A fellow innkeeper in my area phoned me three months ago to tell me about someone who had been helping her. The helper had also been her tenant, but as she was hiring an innkeeper couple to run the entire business, the rental cottage is going to the new couple. Existing helper will stay on the property in different accommodations but is looking for part time work. Fellow innkeeper wanted to be of help to both of us.
Her first job here: the windows. All of them. Wow.
Since then she's cleaned after a long term stay in the apartment, also helped to get a different apartment ready for a suddenly appearing long term stay (double booking nightmare - story for another thread)
Again. a 'wow' job.
Very lucky and grateful

Meant to say I just want to share. Previously I would not have attempted to hire out work. I haven't found anyone local I would have asked except those who are already busy.
The innkeeper friend knows about some of the challenges here and thought the helper would be a mutually advantageous arrangement. She was so right.

It's always good to get a reference like that!

Duff gave me a name and a number. She was an excellent worker. I will call her again for a 5 hour shift. However, our Optometrist is who I relieve at Chapel and he was saying his cleaner was not working out. I gave him her name and number and she is working for him now. He was happy.

I know someone like this.
What this person wants is a certain job, does not want to do anything else so 'there are no jobs' or 'it's so hard finding a job' - unsaid part 'In my field' or 'that I want'.

She told me exactly what she wanted to do - my job! Chat with guests, socialize. You know, what I do all day. And given I was sitting in a coffee shop in the middle of the day...
Seriously, the 3 jobs I told her I knew about were what she kept telling me she liked to do.
My guess? She's burned some bridges in a small town.

What the successful stories have described here are key to finding jobs and work - networking.
It's much easier to get hired (at an level) with a personal recommendation and connection to someone. We have all seen it throughout our lives.

true in my town everyone know everyone - after an interview you will get a call "you worked with so and so at the whatever what's the skinny?" and you get the job or you don't. Plus everyone has a memory like a fricking elephant!

neighbor couple of ours - guy is currently off work after having leukemia followed by a stem cell transplant followed by a nasty rejection reaction/infection, followed by set-back after set-back. He had a good job but he found out yesterday that not only has his FMLA run out, but his job has been eliminated. So, no health insurance, either! I feel so bad for them.
The lady is such a gem. She's been out of work since she has to care for him and his health has obviously been unpredictable. I've had her inn-sit a few times for a couple of hours if we have evening commitments and it's worked out really well for both of us. I do wish I could afford to hire her to do more.

what kind of company fires you for being sick??? he may have a lawsuit. especially if he is over 40.

I don't know how you South of the Borders do it. My dad was in and out of hospital for the last five or so years of his life. It would have bankrupted my parents. We pay a supplement for extras and DH does that grudgingly. I'd hate to have to decide to go without.

When I was old enough to start collecting my pension, we got supplemental for Himself. It has been a fantastic worthwhile expenditure (I have not seen a penny of my pension). Since I do not go to doctors (one reason I cannot get my knees fixed - they will give me a soup to nuts before I could get the knees and I do not want to know), I do not need it.

Unfortunately, we live in an 'at will' state. You can be fired for anything, any time. Our state is so backwards, that you can still be fired for your sexual orientation if your employer doesn't like it.

We don't do it well. Get this government out of our lives and stop letting the insurance companies blackmail us.

And in the news? Another company hiring 200+ employees about 10 miles from here.
