The saying actually went through my head this morning "Youth is wasted on the young" - George Bernard Shaw or Oscar Wilde
A couple from Ohio were here and a lady from North Carolina said excitedly pointing to the Homer Laughlin sugar bowl "I have those same dishes! They belonged to my aunt and I got them before we were married..." pointing to her husband of 45 years.
I replied "Oh yeah, they are from Ohio and we have guests here from Ohio, I should have used those today!" (For Gillum, HL in WV since early 1900's, but these ones are stamped Ohio on the back - so predate the move to WV from OH).
The young Ohio couple came down and I mentioned it and they looked at me like deer in the headlights. And then, oddly enough Jim Brickman was playing on the music I had streaming in the dining room, and I said "And there is Jim Brickman, another Ohioan." Again, blank stare. I said "The Romantic Piano..." ahhh never mind.
I asked the NC gal if she uses her dishes, or cups for coffee? Knowing in advance she would say no she doesn't. She didn't, and told me they can't go in the dishwasher, to which I said:
"That's right, that is what makes them special" and went in and brought her a cup and saucer from that set.
...I later spied her sitting at the table like a Cheshire cat. Her cup of coffee was that much nicer this morning.
Stop saving the good china for that special occasion, every day should be a special occasion, we are not guaranteed tomorrow...

agree. I have started using the good candles too!
I have noticed that the younger guests tend to engage in conversation less. Some are practically afraid! I guess they have heard the horror stories of B&B-keepers who hover and want to be best friends.
Our middle aged guests and older guests tend to be friendlier. I wonder if, besides their lack of appreciation for the finer or older things in Ohio life, if these two were just too young to enjoy the conversation.

Now that sounds like a very nice cup of tea.
No dreaded 'hottles' at JB's! (or any other B&B I don't think)

I have hottles! They're great for when there's a line for coffee or tea. The guest sits down and I can bring the water to them.

Everyone this morning was over 60 so all the talk was about travel. (Representatives from Canada, NZ and here.)
Depending on how young, most everyone can participate in where they've been.
But the electronics do take over too many mornings, all age groups.

I have to ask, what are 'hottles'? Are they those round beaker-like things with ridged plastic around the top that you sometimes get hot water for tea in?

Hotel bottles is what I always considered them to be short for...room service delivery type, yes glass with black plastic at the base so you don't burn your hand.

I have not saved anything "for good" since Granny died leaving a couple drawers full of nice things that she "saved for good". Even my Steubenville China (they closed in 1957) is used for the B & B. My kids used my Fostoria goblets when they were at home.
Definitely use it and enjoy it. That goes for clothes, linens, everything.

I bow to what works for you <blush>, but I bought a bunch of individual tea pots when we started and so far, never more than 4 out at a time. And I always put the kettle on before breakfast service in case someone chooses tea so they don't have to wait. I've just never liked the hottles personally.

Tea pots would be nice! We do heat the water before breakfast but it seems everyone wants it boiling. Then we get a line.
I'm going to look around for funky tea pots.

Please do that! I love old or cool tea pots. And tea cups. You could have fun with that.

I have some "tea-for-one" pots. The teapot makes a small pot of tea and warms the cup as it steeps.

Yes, tea pots are fun! Surprisingly, even our "young" guests enjoyed their personal tea pots.

I love the individual French press pots for coffee. Just makes you feel special...

You are so right! My mom passed away at 93, three years ago. I'm now the proud owner of her complete set of china. The one she got when she married in 1947. I bet she used it no more than 10 times.
