Chatting with a coworker in the office kitchen. (For those who don't know, I work outside the home. DH runs the inn.)
Coworker: Are you busy? Me: Yep, we are full most summer weekends already.
Coworker: How do you get people? Air B n B?
Me: That's for amateurs.
:)

I did go on to tell him that some places in abnb are legit but many are not. I also took the opportunity to tell him to book direct.

We are proud of you! Keep up the good work!

Great!

You know this topic is coming up more and more at the breakfast table. I use to cringe every time but now I give pros and cons.

Just recently a guest was staying here to go to a wedding the MOB had booked a vacation rental via Air. When the MOB & others arrived there was someone else staying in the place and it was a wreck. Other guest called dibs as she was their first. Owner did not offer assistance. MOB had to find other accommodations. Of course I wish I could hear the resolve to this!
We hear about some on the news but how many other stories, like this one, happen every day that are kept under wraps?

And not just not legit - not safety checked, not insured, not professional, not inspected

I actually said, they have no smoke detectors, no licenses and you don't know how clean their kitchen is. :)

Wow! I'd be beyond p!ssed if my rental house was double booked!!!!!

We do have one B&B in our association that uses A almost exclusively and has built a very good reputation. So SOME are legit.
But buyer beware.

A is a hefty percentage for us too.
I am leery of any single source of guests. As good as A has been over the last two years - I certainly don't want to be dependent on them. It's nice to hear from A guests "this is our first real B&B". In those cases I am glad to have been an introduction to a kind of lodging they hadn't considered in the past, and hopefully will use more often in the future.
But the goal is to drive the majority of our own marketing and stay non-dependent on directories (of any sort) or OTAs.

we had this recently as a relocation - guest had had their booking cancelled via A as owner had a better offer of guest already there wanting more nights so pulled the plug 2 days to go - chap we got was super nice but was working at a trade show he had to be here for which is super busy - could have ended up anywhere and paying a fortune which when you are here for work ie to make a living you can't be paying stupid price - said for future you should go for professional places they wouldn't do such a thing - just not cricket!

I think air is a great intro to a real B&B for those folks who would never have booked it in their own.
But for those who get a crappy room in a dirty house and assume that's what all B&B's are like because it's in the name? Not good.

This is true. The definitions have been thrown out with the bath water and this is not just happening on Air, it is happening with many of our directories too. Just had this conversation with what Gillum calls the Big Gorilla.

Ho me sta y. com is now on Trivago and hotelscomined - wont be long before A comes on as well

Yesterday on the radio an announcer said . He just stayed at an A . Liked it. Reason being he had the whole house to himself . No people contact.
Like in a hotel he found the nose of people coming and going down the halls. He did
not like it. Then he said B&Bs you have to have breakfast with other people at the table .
Umm Some people are not morning people sure. But REALLY he is a radio announcer he is in a booth all alone. He is the chatty one. Guess he likes just being by him self.

We stayed at a B&B on our honeymoon. Breakfast at the communal table. DH does not want to be chatty first thing before coffee, no does he like heavy fragrances worn by others.
We decided then and there we would have individual breakfast tables. <grin>

I'm the same as your DH. Don't expect me to be cheery & social. We're so anti-social when we travel that when we do a cruise, we request a table for 2. It can always be set up for 4 if we've met someone we really like while on the cruise. But don't force me to be at one of those tables of 10!

Airbnb wouldn't be having problems if it didn't try to advertise itself as what it is not. All the government would have to do is say, "Excuse me Airbnb, since you have the name "bnb" in your name and advertise as that along with hotels, inns, and guest houses, these are our terms. You got this amount of time to bring your places up to code or else. End of story… Think of all the wonderful things our towns, states, and country can do with all that extra income. As I type the city hall is undergoing major remodeling. Bet Airbnb can pay for it for them in just back taxes.
