Four people , two rooms, two nights. Seemed happy enough. Didn't talk much.
Cant
can't figure out what we did to deserve a chitty tip.

Did it look deliberate or just forgotten? I hate stuff like that.

Yesterday after deducting the jellies & honey purchased, I got an $18 top from the sister who had taken 2 rooms and thought her brother had left no tip. This morning I noticed on the dresser in his room - a Canadian nickel and quarter and an American quarter - so he DID leave a tip after all.

Some pundit somewhere stated , and every cheapskate took to it, that shows you did an excellent job.
The BS meter is spinning frenetically right now.

I looked it up and a lot of posts said it means bad job. DH is a bit upset.

I said good morning to them and one of 4 looked up and responded. DH had the same experience. So maybe they were a total bad fit from the start.
They are from UK. Not sure if that matters.

I think both of you are being overly sensitive. It's just a couple of useless pennies. Brits & Europeans and in fact, most of the world do not tip. If you thought they had a nice time when they were there, don't let this unhinge you.

I agree BD. DOn't read more into the pennies than is. If things weren't ok, I expect they would have said something. Most people don't tip at a B & B.

Do you have obvious housekeeping staff or is it just you two? I was told one should not tip the owner. Could just be spare change left ... I often found pennies in the trash. I can tell you not to let it bother you but of course you are wondering.
Here is a story ... I left a tip for housekeeping when traveling with a companion. I was first out the room door. I couldn't find something so turned right back in the hallway and went back to the room to look and the tip was gone. My COMPANION had pocketed it. This friend also decided I was too generous and took some of a tip off a restaurant table saying I'd get it back later ... but it never ended up in my pocket. (We aren't friends any more!) That can and does happen.

Oh wow I am so sorry this happened. This is when Generic comes on to say 1 penny means bad, two means good. And we all debate it and say SHOW ME THE MONEY means good.
Groups, even two rooms, are the worst, they never appreciate things like a single room would.

Oh bother. Sorry, again. They will hit TA as well. They wield their power on TA like a light sabor luke.
To help lighten this UK chow down, they don't sit and enjoy breakfast til after they are done eating. Yes, UK Cambs and the rest I am talkin' bout you!

Yep, years ago waitressing I got a 2 cent tip. The table was far from my others and the service was slow. Lump taken.
Just wish they had said something to you so you would have a clue.

Years ago I was a waitress. I was always told 1 penny, bad service. 1 penny with a real tip means excellent service. Never heard anything about 2 cents as a tip but a Google search shows it is bad.

My Mom always said 2 cents in a dirty plate meant REALLY bad.

When I stay somewhere traveling, I almost always leave my pennies because they don't have enough value to carry, but I'm too tight to pitch real money into the trash. It never occurred to me someone would take it as a comment on the stay. I'm just lightening my load.

I look to see how/where the money is left. There are places where it looks deliberate, others where it looks like what you do - offload the change. I have a 2 quart mason jar gathering all the change. It's usually worth about $100 at the end of a season.
But, yeah, you might want to consider how it looks both in the idea of 'bad service' or that the person cleaning the room probably doesn't think loose change is 'valueless' but also wonders why someone would only leave what's probably under $1 if they meant to actually leave a tip.
Which reminds me I need to tell my new housekeeper not to take it as an insult.
And I should go roll some of that change and go out for dinner this week!
