I don't want to appear that I'm pushing them out the door but their car is gone, they didn't leave the key, and there's not a peep of noise coming from the room. Do I just sit down and wait for 11 AM and then knock, or what?
Lots of guests leave without telling us but most leave the keys. Some are just gone out for a walk in the park and will be back to get their suitcases later on.
We need to have the room at noon for a wedding guest who is switching rooms and has to be back to dress. (So they did the right thing by booking the night before, albeit in a different room!)

Knock at 11AM..

I try and look in the key hole if I can without looking like a sex pervert - people for some reason I don't understand think its helpful to leave the key in the room.

And then, another room showed up at 11:30, clothes in hand, ready to check in. Actually tried to push in the door waving the clothes and saying they had to get dressed for a wedding. None of the rooms are cleaned. We worked on the fluffs first as THEY are all coming back to get ready for a wedding. But they booked the night before.

I always say "gosh I'm sorry but the rooms who book early check in get priority" ie if you don't say and or pay you don't get its that simple.

if there car was gone, I would just knock on the door and say Housekeeping..if no response...in I go.

I'm glad this is resolved ... I know I'm chiming in late.
I rarely had your problem of a quick flip for an early check in but I would sometimes go up to a room 20 minutes before breakfast was over at 10 to see if they would be joining us. I'd knock and call out ... to ask about breakfast. If no answer I'd leave. At 11 I'd call out 'housekeeping' knock loudly and try the door. I would usually find the key on the bedside table. Once, though, just after 11, I called out and opened an unlocked door and heard the shower running. Exited quick, shut door and then made lots of noise in the hallway about housekeeping. Not to be confused with checked out guest who slipped back into the place, went upstairs and into his bathroom around 11:30 to use the toilet and had a chambermaid walk in on him. His and Her Screams got my attention.

I dont wait until 11am if I think they have checked out. if car is gone I go into room after first knocking and saying Housekeeping in a loud voice!
They usually leave key in room.

Another late chime inner…. Loud two Knocks. Housekeeping! (Housekeeping to Room So-and-so! If doors are close together.) Followed by another knock. No answer after count ten. My key goes in the lock…. I now call out the room as a couple times the door behind me will open or the room I am knocking will assume its for the other room.

I had to wait til checkout time if we were busy ... I had eight rooms to tend to and was usually more concerned about someone strolling in late to breakfast ....
