A public area restroom is just a good idea, for earlybirds, for friends of guests (if your situation allows it), for teas, for.....just a bunch of reasons.
If you are in the planning phase, make that part of the plan!

Good point. I wish I had one. We let people into our house if needed..

Back when we were shared, I let a repeat guest use ours (you could go through a pass-through from the kitchen and I closed our bedroom door) because other guests were in the shared and she was in NEED. Funny thing, that was the last time she came. No longer doing horses or she did not like how I lived (it was before the kids redid our bathroom)? I will never know. I never took that chance again.

We have one, tucked away under our stairs! Its not big, but big enough. We have tall ceilings so the height in the bathroom is actually normal height. Its even big enough to change in. I've had people change in there before!

I have considered the impression it makes. I just say, "old house. we haven't gotten to this one yet."
Hope it doesn't stop people from visiting. It's not disgusting, just old. 50's sink attached to the wall.

A nearby friend's has no bathroom that is not in a guest room or in their private area. They hold house concerts and other gatherings. A room has to be out of service so the bathroom can be used. And it would be difficult to add now.
We took it down to the studs at the beginning so easier to add. Due to this forum: no bathrooms 'down the hall', plus because of restaurant aspirations we needed an extra common area restroom. It has proved to be one of the best ideas.

This is a great point Anon! I really wish we had one in a common area for many reasons.

I cannot stress how important this is. And the closer to the door the better. You will have guests showing up at 9:30 AM thinking they can just go to their room and use the facilities. If you let them into the inn they don't want to leave. Breakfast smells so good, can I just have a coffee and a muffin. Oh, you don't mind if I just sit down here to eat. And where should we go for lunch? And what time is check in? What are you doing for the rest of the morning? I'd love to chat! Are those the guests who were in my room? They're gone so just show me where it is and I'll get my suitcase out of the car. (If they haven't already hauled the 45 lb behemoth to the door and deposited it in the entryway where everyone is now tripping over it.)
So, if you have a rest room right by the door (kind of where you would put a coat closet in a house) the better off you are.
Because, seriously, are you going to stand outside the bathroom door to escort them back out the door? No. You are a busy person who is making breakfast or cleaning rooms or taking reservations or baking goodies for the afternoon. They will get away from you. They will go into vacated rooms and poke around. They may walk off with the housekeeper's tip. Or the towels. Or whatever because you'll never know, will you?

Perfect spot for it! We have a bathroom there, but it's attached to a guestroom!

Good advice! The only thing I would also suggest with this is this. Do not put it near the breakfast area or kitchen. Unless you have an extremely talented exhaust fan and sound proofing. Depending on what business is going on in the bathroom the flavorful smells of breakfast could be replaced with something a little less appetizing...

This is a definite YES! I have a bathroom in the hallway that is convenient for pool goers (so they don't have to tromp upstairs to their room), but it is also located between the kitchen and dining room. When one of the couple has to do their thing, and don't want to interrupt the other in their private bathroom, they think it's ok to come down and use that one. Hello? RUDE! I haven't figured out a way to keep people from doing this.

I do that. I stand outside the bathroom and wait for them. I don't want them wondering around my private home.
Obnoxious. But I do it anyway. Maybe a little passive aggressive way of conveying how inconvenient it is for me.
