Yup, I'm asking. This is a place I go over and help with when she needs me.
Guests have gone and they bagged up their own sheets into a pillow case. They also unzipped and pulled the bb mattress case off and put that in a pillow case. Left it all standing by the door. Strange smell in the room so I moved close to investigate and the entire mattress was coated with talcum powder. They must have brought it or bought it to try to hide what happened.
Three nights of serious accidents in the bed and dumping a mountain of powder on it. ugh There was no rubber mat between the 'waterproof' case and the mattress. And with this amount of urine, night after night, could a rubber mat have withstood it? I'm not sure, but I think they flipped the mattress because both sides of that cover have stains. Which affects the box spring, too, if they just flipped the damp mattress over.
I've vacuumed off the damp powder. The mattress and I are at a stand off. I think it might have to be tossed. Have texted the owner. She has until next Thursday to figure out what to do and do it.
The mattress is standing up by the window now.
In your experience, is the mattress done? I just can't imagine a new guest coming in and sleeping on it now.

Also ... I keep reading this kind of post. What on earth is going on with people? I see so many ads for depends and things ... why aren't people using them if they need them?? Use and toss in the morning instead of wetting the bed. What you throw in the trash is your business. Are they embarrassed to buy and use them? Seems so crazy. Denial. Disrespectful.
Yes, I went over late to help out last minute and just didn't expect this.
Time for wine!

The mattress is ruined. I would never use it for any other guest. The couple should be charged for this sort of damage. They would be fools to try and deny but you never know

if its been 3 nights then they have a medical problem and should take steps to deal with it when they travel - if embarrassed to buy in shops you can have them delivered online to your house in a plane box so there is no excuse. PLus I am 100% sure till people could care less and in the UK we have a lot of self service check outs so no problem there no staff to see you anyway.
Surely its more embarrassing to be confronted by an angry innkeeper asking for the price of a new mattress?

The smell won't really go away. Plus, once it dries there will be a lovely stain. I say toss it. I know the health inspector would say that. We had to. The mattress was soaked right thru to the box spring.

JB --- did your wetting guests happen to say they were heading to Cape Cod when they left you? These were two older women traveling together. I did not meet or even see them.
This is not my place, one of those times when I am perfectly connect NOT to be the owner.
oh!!! wetting guests!! instead of wedding guests ...

It's done. If I kept it, I would be constantly worried that the next guest would smell it. I just don't see how you can get all that dampness out of several layers of material. A few hundred bucks for a new mattress is worth the piece of mind that comes with knowing that the next guest won't be affected.

I am so irritated by reading these types of posts. And it infuriates me that people just leave and don't say anything?!!?!? I just don't get it. These aren't children, they are grown adults, many of whom were brought up in the same era that we were. They had to have been taught to respect others' property, to be honest, and responsible for their own actions. What is happening here?!?!?!

I think that mattress definitely needs to be tossed. I mean, would the owner or you want to sleep on something like that?
These guests should have asked for assistance, owned up to the damage, or something! More and more, I just don't get why people behave as they do...

Can You claim it on your house hold insurance? Or the B&B insurance for a new mattress?

This is not my place, not my call.
I haven't heard back from the owner so I don't know what she's going to do. Or is doing.
I texted her again and she responded, said she'd check on it Wednesday which is tomorrow.
There are guests checking in Friday morning for a weeklong rental so she has to move on this. I don't think she took me seriously. Well ... we'll see. Maybe she figures the smell will fade, maybe she thinks it can be encapsulated with new zipper casing, but I encountered it fresh and would think weight on the bed would bring it out.
If it were me, new mattress and box spring would be installed now with rubber sheeting and then the zipper casing, then the sheets.
I'd put the other mattress and box spring in storage and be requesting reimbursement from those women. I know that some people stop being aware of the odor they cause. But this is unacceptable. And obvious attempt to remedy or hide it by dousing the bed with powder.
Yes I took pictures of that, and the mattress cover and sheets with all rings around it, and the mattress showing the stains. But I don't know if there are pictures showing a pristine mattress. It's in her hands now. I did what I could to help.

I've been really curious if these were the same ladies, on a long road trip together or something.
