Yesterday a triple murder was committed 70 miles from our location. The suspect was previously arrested nearer our location. Area media said to watch out for the guy. I kept outside doors locked later than usual and told guests what was going on. DH said I should not be negative in any way with guests. I disagreed in this particular case. Suspect was apprehended later yesterday.
What would you say to guests?

To me not really negative to make guests aware of a possible problem in the area, you wouldn't consider it negative to say there was construction on a certain road and suggest they take another path, seems much the same to me.

We always have the newspaper out in the dining room. Most people glance at it.
I'd do what you did and keep doors locked and give a gentle reminder to guests to lock doors behind them.
We had a double murder a mile from here. They were caught before we could even say anything. The guys who robbed the bank across the street were more dangerous as they drove their getaway car into a ditch and needed another one ASAP.

The safety and well being of your guests tell me you did the right thing.

You did the right thing!

Crazy things happen all over. Tell the guests and everyone can sigh relief when the individual is caught.

This is no different to how we answer the question about car safety in our lot. We get people moving and have lots of their belongings in the car, concerned about its safety. We tell them that while we can not guarantee anything, we have not had a problem with that.

Your guests needed to know for their own safety..
I agree.
The look on one of the guests faces was what prompted DH's reaction.
That guest did book for next year before she left so all is well.

How far away was he arrested prev?
this would make the difference in what I decided to do.

One reason the hairs on the back of my neck rose over this. The prior arrest was 35 miles away. With local festivals (anonymity opportunities) near us that weekend, I thought the suspect might head this way. He was apprehended 20 miles east of us. There is only one through highway, so traffic stops are very effective.

someone held up and robbed the Amish fruit stand just a mile up the street from me. Poor woman. She was able to keep her wits about her and get a description of the suspect, his vehicle and the tag! The police caught him less than 2 hours later!
Guess I'm going to move up my plans to get a front door with a programmable lock.

People can be such d!cks. Poor woman.

Really you must tell ... I would not come back if I was staying someplace and the hosts knew of a possible danger and did NOT tell me.
