Twice today I have closed a tab and found a full screen URGENT CHROME UPDATE
Both times I closed the tab. Is it legit? I do not need to have a computer invasion at this point in time (paid my real estate taxes so am broke) so I prefer to not click the Chrome Ball unless I am certain it is OK.
 
None of that here. I'd ignore. Just today the Indians called telling me I had an urgent problem with Windows. After hanging up I did discover a bathroom window open in 90 degree heat though.
 
My grandma's computer gets it all the time and we tell her its a scam. None of ours does. But if mine did, I'd know its a scam for sure!

Thanks for the confirmation. I thought as much but wanted reassurance I was correct. I do not mind admitting to being numbnutz and it might help a newbie who was afraid to ask.

I had a guy call from India .I tried to keep him on the line by telling him,I am looking for new windows. What kind do you sell? They come back saying they don't sell windows they want to fix the problem with my windows on my computer ...I keep going after them about windows for the house. And tell them I don't have windows on my computer. And they keep talking about, windows on my computer. We keeps talking about needing new windows.Eventually after several mins they give up and hang up.
Now after serveral months we have not hear from them.

I used to tell them that i have 2 computers so they need to give me the IP address of the computer that has the problem, or I string them along for ages and then tell them I have a Mac.
One guy wanted me to write down this 12 character code, I kept saying "oh, am I supposed to write it down", "oh I need a pen", "oh my pens not working", "hold on, the door bell", "oh, am I supposed to write it down"....at which point he swore at me and hung up but I kept him on the phone for 20 mins, which is 20 minutes less he had to trick someone less weary.
 
In such a situation I close the screen by using Task Manager as I don't even trust clicking on the "close button", then go to the website of the program (Google in your case) and check to see if they say updates are needed. Same principle as giving a credit card when I call a company, but not sharing that info with an unknown who calls me.
Same thing with the virus scam, don't click on anything, and then run your own virus scanner.
 
That is just another attempt to download corrupt spyware viruses and more. Don't click.

I expected as much. I do not click. Just thought that if I am getting it, someone else may be getting it too. With the "knowing ones" saying DO NOT, it would get the point across.
