Around noon the doorbell rings which was annoying since I was doing fluffs so I had to take my cleaning stuff out and lock the door. Get to the door to find a lady standing there between the two sets of doors with her hands on her hips. Good thing I locked the second set of doors. She said she doesn't know when check in time is but can she check in now. I had just turned on the AC in their room and she looked like a complainer so I told her that the room wasn't ready so to come back at three o'clock. They were welcome to leave the car in the parking lot if they wanted to hit town but sorry can't check in. That was okay but her husband needs to use the bathroom. Okay, come on in. She goes to get him while I turn on the half bath's light and tell myself that if he shows up with luggage its going in the closet. He makes a beeline for their room when I interrupted, "Hello sir, the bath is here!" I ran upstair to get something while I waited for them to finish in the bathroom. I wasn't to the top of the stairs when I heard her over the monitor trying their room's door…. it was locked, too bad!
This evening I found out from my aunt that she had called yesterday for an early check in. My aunt had refused and told her to come at three since she knew I would be doing solo today and didn't need the added part of a guest hanging around…..
 
Some people have a lot of nerve! So glad you saw through their manipulative attempt! We don't have a half bath and I would have turned them away. It's these kind of instances that really wear an innkeeper down over the busy season.
 
Keep a box with depends by the door... sorry, no public bath. Here's what's available :)
 
I'm generally amenable, but attitude like that gets a No from me.
I had people arrive hour and a half before check-in on Sunday, I was right in the middle of serving up our roast lunch, so I ignored the door. They went away and came back at 1 minute past check-in time, they knew the damn check in time!
Then they complained that the local Inn was fully booked and they'd have to drive to get dinner, felt like saying "oh, so that's two things in your confirmation you ignored then!!".
id agreed an early check in for someone else for yesterday. They turned up hour and half before the agreed time, was told to come back at the agreed time.
Not playing these games any more, especially now we have proper T's & C's that people have to agree to when they book.

Ive started to say that to people as we email 4pm the day before with time of arrival, if you want earlier and how to get into the car park
Couple "we are struggling to find anywhere to park" Oh you want to be in the car park, Im guessing you didn't get our email with all the instructions of how to get into the car park etc
 
Don't really even have time to post this but I'm chowing down...
Couple wanted an earlier check in (three hours earlier!). At the time of their request, we had a dead zone and I told them I'd see what I could do. Since then, all my rooms booked and I have a full turnover this morning. I've emailed them twice to tell them that their early check in will not be available but they're welcome to drop off their bags and explore the area or sit outside in the back and enjoy the view. Of course, no response. I'll have to see what happens!!
 
I let people use the bathroom, but it's obvious to them that it is in my home and not part of the inn.
But since I am the kind that sometimes needs a bathroom, I have empathy. What are they going to do? Pee in the bushes?
I also stand outside the bathroom while they go. Awkward? Passive-aggressive? Maybe, but safer. I don't want them wandering my home unattended.
 
We've had them come in as early as 9. Anyone who has ever travelled anywhere knows that there is no checking in at 9 AM. Crazy.
 
No early check-ins unless I am sitting here doing absolutely nothing and feel like it. Front door is locked and a note saying I'm out running errands is up. Housekeeper is instructed not to answer the door as she has work to do and can't check them in anyway. From 11-3pm is all the time I have to do anything for myself which includes eating and during the summer being with my kids or now that we bought a boat we go up to the lake and get back here at 2:55 if we want to. After 10 years I've heard every possible story. The "I have to use the bathroom excuse" is so lame - you've just driven by a gas station, a Visitors Center, a Town Hall, a coffee shop, etc. all with bathrooms to get to my location to say you have to use a bathroom. That and we want to drop off our bags - why, are they in plain view containing bars of gold you're afraid will get stolen? What do you do when you are driving somewhere and stop for lunch -- take them into the restaurant? All of these are just the excuses they use to try for an early checkin figuring we'll all give in and let them in early. But we have to have a life too and I no longer feel bad saying no.
Last week a guy called and said he wanted to drop off his bags into his room. I said the room wasn't ready so he said he'd leave them in the entryway, to which I said I could do that. He then said I'll be there in 20 minutes. I was on my way to the store to food shop so I said I wouldn't be here that early that I'd be at the store. He had the nerve to ask me how long I'd be. I said about an hour and a half so coming to drop off the bags wouldn't work. So I'm at the store and my Ring doorbell buzzes and I see/hear them at the front door, they ignored the fact that I said I wouldn't be here and came to us instead of going hiking. I hear her say "Well she said we could drop off our bags, this is ridiculous as she's shaking the front door. He said well she said she had to go to the store. She then said well they should be here to let us leave the bags and she wiggled the front door again." My hubby answered the Ring and said we weren't there and he'd try to get housekeeper to see if she could unlock the door so they could leave the bags. He's trying to reach her and they get ticked and drove away -- all the while people we can hear your comments on the doorbell while he's trying to get ahold of the housekeeper (which is clearly marked with audio/video surveillance by the way) which were less than kind toward us when it was you who didn't listen and wanted what you wanted. You should have gone hiking instead of trying to force an early checkin and wasting your time and then creating bad will being rude to us. Now on the DNB list cause who needs these people in your home anyway.

I've asked the same question. can't understand why everyone wants to get in an hour or two or three early, then simps drop their bags in the room and head right back out. Crazy.

A guest told us they were concerned some one would break into their car . As they came from the Big city . They never leave any thing in their car as it leads people to break into their cars to steal what ever. I guess living in a small centre we never have to worry about that kind of thing at ever.

I had someone say the other day, 'this must be a safe place to live.' As I didn't make any connection with that and anything we were talking about I asked why.
'All your ground floor windows are open. We don't dare do that where we live.'

Thanks for the suggestion but as they are not one size fits all, I would end up with a huge mass of boxes by the front door…. Also they might want somewhere to change into them…. Then they might decide it was pretty handy and take some along when they leave…. Just sounds too complicated to me!

Love the Ring, it's a godsend since we moved into our little house next-door. It buzzes us when a car drives by the front door to the parking area and we have plenty of time to get over here and greet them. Also lets us see who is coming back so we know if it's a checkin if we recognize the car or someone new. We have COLD winters and the battery life only lasts a few days before we have to recharge it. Hubby is going to hardwire it in the coming weeks so we don't have to worry about that - once it's getting electrical the cold to the battery doesn't matter supposedly. I highly recommend it.
