Market to the unhappy people. No, not the PITAS, but to those people whose experiences have fallen short of their expectations. You know, those people like in the other thread who maybe didn't get the appropriate response when an issue was brought to the attention of the owner/hotel/b&b, etc.
Maybe we can turn our approach around a little. A little messaging on our websites mentioning how we as owners are there for THEM. I already do this a bit on my website because I WANT people who have never been to a b&b. Yes, I actually want hotel people. I find that first time b&b goers are usually so thrilled that they get such a personalized experience with better/more amenities. Rarely do these couples give me any grief. You who does give me grief? Very experienced b&b couples! Especially when they come from the other coast and are used to very large b&bs that in my view are more boutique hotels.
Anyway, check out this article and see if there's any value for you in it.

We get those same 'expert' B&B goers! When I hear them talking about the other places they've been, the ones with full time staff, a bar, etc, I cringe. I know we're not that and you can't help but compare.
When we find a select registry book left behind I cringe as well. I know we are not in that league. We're way too laid back and casual.

What's surprising to me is that these "experienced" B&B guests seem to be oblivious to what they booked sometimes. And, if they're really used to staying at various B&Bs, they should realize that all are unique.
If they want a SR inn, they should book it!

You sound like my kind of place, some of us wouldn't fit in with fancy and formal

Funny, the three places where we've had the worst stay were SR properties. One was on the verge of bankruptcy and was let go but still kept paying their dues so they were in the book. The second the innkeeper was totally kooky and had an annoying breakfast experience with singing hamsters that made me cringe and their gardeners showed up outside my window at 7:30 -- the two ladies were chatting away and woke me. The last was the one over in Maine this month that is completely full but the shower was full of black mold -- got a story about two foreign housekeepers who she paid for their visas and they got married and left and she was out $7K. I didn't pick these places because they were SR, they just happened to be.

The singing hamsters I've heard about. From my own guests.
