We have the zippy, 'new' terminal that does chip n pin. If the card has a chip you can't use the stripe. Guest checked in today and did not know the pin for the card. Said husband knows. Husband showed up and said there is no pin. Can't run card without pin. Can't skip that step. Called processor. They said I could key in the transaction (at x% more) and run it that way. Said guest has to call bank and get pin removed if they don't want to use it. Guest said nothing doing, everywhere they go NO ONE has a problem keying in the card. It works 'everywhere' (list of big name stores that don't have chip n pin turned on yet).
Sigh. It's all MY fault my machine is too 'stupid' to skip the pin step when it's required.
So, now you know. If you steal someone's chipped card all you have to say is, 'there is no pin,' and ALL those big, brand name stores will key in the card and skip that step. Why do we bother?

I have 2 cards with chips, and I use them everywhere around here, but no place I've been has asked for the pin. Just a signature. I read somewhere that the card companies aren't going to require pins on chip cards for now. Apparently yours does! I wish they'd get their act together.

wow! My newest card has a chip but I know nothing about a pin. Haven't been asked anywhere. So I'd be turned away at your place if you want to be safe(r)?

Neither of our cards has a pin. I was VERY pssed when I called to ask what is the pin - where do I set it and was told no pin needed. My reply was then why bother with the chip. Then - It encrypts with each transaction. I answered then whoever has my card can use it - big whoop for security.

Not my card. Not my machine with problem. Guest's card requires PIN. Guest insists it doesn't. Processor says it does and guest has to call their issuer to make the problem go away. Guest says, 'i don't care, everyone works around me.'

I can call in to the processor to get a voice verification.

WOW! Who is he?!? I'm floored. Where's jaw dropping face button!

What I "think" I've seen so far is that most charges work without the pin, but if card is run as a debit it requires the pin number, however a guest recently from the UK, his card did require the pin on a charge.

All is well. Guest had no idea how merchants have to deal with all of these issues.

Stupid stores. Wouldn't work around here, though. Everyone knows that if you don't know your PIN, it's a stolen card. No one will key around. They ask you for another card that you know the PIN.

I think I've only seen 1 card this year (I think it was from the US) that didn't have a chip, and that's from people from all over the world.
My machine insists on reading the chip if I swipe. For UK/Europeans it will ask for a pin.
For North American cards I'd say 40% of the time it will ask for a pin, the rest it will ask for a signature.
