There is a huge event going on in town. Really cool stuff. A Plein Air Art Festival. Artists are in town from all over the country to paint outside. It's a week long event.
We are housing one of the artists for 7 nights as a donation.
I just looked at the website and sponsors are listed including a category called, participating merchants. No mention of any of the inns that are housing artists for free. None.
I sent them an email.
"We are disappointed not to see our name among the sponsors, or perhaps 'participating merchants.' We have donated a room to house an artist for 7 nights. We are happy to participate, but certainly want a bit of recognition for our business. 7 nights amounts to a $1470 donation.
We support the event and are truly enjoying seeing the artists around town. We look forward to the gala and will likely buy a painting. However, e, naturally, would have liked to be recognized for our donation alongside the other town businesses that have been listed."

Good for you! We've had the same thing happen here. No mention at all of us 'contributing' in any way.

trouble is too many of these things think its pocket change to us - don't think about the money we are not talking to give it!

Exactly! The room is empty, therefore you are not giving anything up. There's no 'product'.

We are very fortunate, I guess, that the people we work with on events like this are very appreciative of our contributions!
Not to sound like a back-seat driver or anything, but for the future, I would suggest making sure you understand from event organizers -- before agreeing to host anyone -- what sort of recognition you will receive for your contribution.

Lesson learned! Believe me!

response from the group:
So sorry for the oversight! I will have the Name Inn added to the list of participating merchants on our website right away. Your generous donation has been tracked with the other host housing donors, most of whom are private homeowners, and we didn ot want to list them on the website as such.
Consider it done, and thank you SO much!

Exactly. We donate gift baskets, with bread, pie, house made goodies, and of course, our own business cards and brochures. Not room nights. Nope.

Amen. And giving away seven?

So sorry for the oversight. Why does it happen so often?
I donated rooms also ... and was very hurt not to have been included in the program books for an event/fundraiser. Despite assurances UP FRONT and I gave them four lines of copy to be used plus a photo. And then I was mad as the mention on their website came along after the fact. The next year I declined. Sorry.

I will certainly verify everything in advance in the future.

I guess I am fortunate (or perhaps it is because I am like crap - I am everywhere) but I do get recognized if the City has anything to do with it and most times when it is any other event except "Girls Night Out" done by retail. Of course I am usually putting in time AND money. I am a sponsor for the Turkey Trot donating $$$ and a room for the timekeeper every year. It benefits 4-H so I am in.
When they built the stage for Frontier Days, I coughed up $100 toward the materials and went over with some water for the guy building it - ended up holding the tape when they were measuring boards. He did a FB post thanking all and mentioned me and the Gillum.
Retail is the one who conveniently forgets I am here.

at least it was a genuine mistake and I can see how they wouldn't list private home owners who were putting people up

It is our slower season. We could have filled it on the weekend, but we aren't full during the week, so really, four nights of actual loss.

Glad they got it updated for you. I've learned over the years that these artists groups call and ask us to donate rooms like it's nothing. Four nights of income is a lot to give up -- doubt any of them would take a 4 day cut in pay from their day job paycheck.

Update - not only did they add our name to the website, but they also thanked us on their FB page with a picture of our inn. So, they did their best to fix.
In the meantime, the gala opening was fun! And even better, the artist staying with us gave us a painting. He let us choose from 6 and framed and hung it for us right then.
I'm thrilled with it!
(I have a picture but, for some reason, have never been able to add a picture to this website. If someone wants to send an email, I'll send it over.)

'Free' art is a good thing!
