Now you've gone and done it!
What was I supposed to think? There was a jewelry box in the kitchen on the table. Innkeeper DH bought me a piece of jewelry for my birthday coming up? I nearly fell over. It just isn't his thing.
And he is not very good at hiding it. Busy morning, full house. Elopement last night. Breakfast delivery, a lot of movin' and shakin'.
I finally broach the subject, and if you are wondering, yes I did open it, and it was empty. He's trying to outsmart me and putting the fine jewelry in a bigger box and wrapping it, ah ha...I wonder how long before he notices it is still on the table?
I ask him, in some nonchalant goofy way that I see there is a jeweler's box on the table.
He replies "Oh yeah, I need to give that to them, that was from the wedding rings last night."
DOH!
He laughs, "You didn't think that was a gift for you did you?"
Me "Of course I did, I am a woman aren't I!?"

I have not received gift from mine in years. He thinks taking me to the Cr ab Sha ck (where he gets the kielbasa & corn on cob from my dinner) is my birthday. Expensive dinner so it is OK. When it comes down to it - at my age, there is not much I really want since I cannot travel and leave him alone (and he can no longer travel).

Right!

All that is left for him to do now to make it up to you is take you shopping at the jewelry store….Be sure to leave your purse behind so he knows he's buying! But throw a card in your pocket just in case…

Well, I would have reacted the same way and the outcome would have been the same here!

I'd hate to guess how many years since I purchased that kind of gift (50?), money always went in the same pot. A gift had to be charged, it took the fun out of the process if as the bookkeeper she had to figure our how to pay the bill the next month and short something else to manage.

My DH is the epitome of frugal.
But that being said....I lost a gold hoop earring once from a set that my parents had brought me back from Mexico when I was very young. They meant alot to me. DH helped me look for it (lost it in a parking lot during winter) and we just couldn't find it. The next day when I came home from work, there was a small box waiting for me in the kitchen. Inside were a pair of gold hoops! Now, they never could replace the original, but they meant just as much to me.
That must be at least 10 years ago but I'm just not one that needs to be showered with gifts. His hard work and help are priceless and are more valuable to me than anything he could purchase

My son sent me a pair of earrings for my 50th (he said it was the first time he ever bought jewelry). Sent another pair for my 60th. He missed 70 - was in Finland by then. (And they are my most treasured.)

A hint:
Save some mad money back for this kind of surprise. It will be appreciated.
Trust me on this.

Please don't think I don't appreciate the girl I am blessed to have, we've walked a long journey from a seventeen year old bride a few days out of high school to great-grandma, I would be useless without her at my side. In earlier years paychecks went home to her, bills were paid and if we were lucky groceries lasted till the next paycheck arrived, mad money didn't exist, more recent years have treated us pretty decent but she'd rather spend on the kids or something for the garden, jewels or clothes are not a large interest.

He knew pierced. He was probably about 10 when I decided on a whim to go ahead and get holes in my head.
