As part of my changes for 2017 I am changing all of my booking to room only with breakfast as an add on - this has 2 advantages
(1) hopefully picking up a few people who want room only
(2) if they are booking a double room for 1 person they can just add 1 breakfast where as before we were charging for 2 or people would not pick the right number of people actually coming to a room because it made no difference to price - where as now they will be more likely do do so ie 1 breakfast bought 1 person which means we save on towels and toiletries as well.
All sorted with booking.com - tick a box for breakfast and how many - can't seem to do it on expedia any ideas? have logged a support ticket but just want it sorted

How do you keep track of who paid to have breakfast and who didn't? I'm picturing taking a bowl of cereal or a muffin out of someone's hands or saying, "I'll just add breakfast to your bill, shall I?"
I find it very confusing. That's me, tho.
It's because we have all these buffet extras out all the time, and accessible to everyone, that I think we might lose out on this offer because guests would just eat cereal in their room.

How do you deal with someone who assumes breakfast is included, but didn't see the check box?
Not much help with Exdia, am I? Sorry. Just wondering how you make it work.

I think this has to be part of the check-in process - I see you won't be having breakfast in the morning - and go from there. Hopefully, the OTA registration form has that info because, yeah, lots of people are going to opt for the price and then scream 'bait and switch' when you say they have to pay for breakfast.

I understand your reasoning but I agree this sounds like it could cost you in bad PR and unhappy guests and maybe bad reviews. Have you considered instead, offering a specific discount if a guest does not want breakfast. Instead of making them opt into breakfast, make them opt out of breakfast in order to get the better price.

Our good friend "Jon Sable" tried that with air awhile back and it didn't turn out so well…. so I wouldn't do it. Just my thoughts. I also agree with Mort's post. Too much trouble and set up right for bad reviews for the little you might gain.

Then again, cambs is in a completely different market. She gets tons of bookings from people who are setting up conventions. They may get something to eat there and not have time to sit and wait in the morning.
But, if the market is there I'm not sure why you'd lower the price by excluding breakfast. Just call it a win if they don't eat.

See our problem is partly overwork if they want to eat their own porridge pot in their room fine not a problem with me.
Book make it clear - £9 breakfast is clearly shown next to the room rate plus a tick box at the booking stage if you want to add
Expedia should and note I say should say room only in big letters for the rate plan as many places do various rates ie room only/ single occupancy/double occupancy/with breakfast and so on. Partly I think its a slightly different market to most on here - our bread and butter is business people who often travel a lot so if they ate cooked every day would be HUGE - or we deal with a lot of workmen who are given breakfast at the office/or site for free so don't want to effectively pay again for mine. Plus more and more properties are going this way due to high commission bills as takes that revenue out of the OTA's grasp.
