Checked in a couple who immediately asked to move/change rooms. She said, "He told me when I made the reservation that we could change rooms when we got here." I said, "We are full. We probably weren't full when you made the reservation." She said, "I'm afraid, because it is on the first floor, that it will be noisy." I said, "I'm sorry. We don't have any rooms. Most of our guests are here for peace and quiet, so I think it will be ok." She said, "Well, I guess it's my own fault."
Great. Unhappy at the start. Mind you, our first floor room is our second least expensive - because it's on the first floor. And I imagine that's why she booked it.
Next morning, they made a point to tell us that the room was fine and they loved the place.
:)

We just had a guest that was in the cruise ship industry. He said that on departure day, there was always a huge line at the check-in desk of people who are trying to upgrade or change their room. Apparently, the industry has been training their guests to engage in this behavior along with rigorous complaining in order to get what they want. Sometimes folks just need some solid guest management (like you provided) to let go of these behaviors that have led to unwarranted benefits elsewhere.

Often, it's the cruise line's own fault. I booked a family cruise and there were 18 of us. As I was working with the rep from the cruise line (not a travel agent), he encouraged me to put mis-matched partners in each room. As long as 1 passenger in the room got a military or senior or past cruiser discount, everyone in that room also got the discount/upgrade. I was booked in the same room as my father-in-law who got a military discount...my husband was booked in a room with a family member who had a senior discount, etc. Once we boarded, we all had to go to the purser's desk to change the names and credit cards of each room! It was a pain, but all of us got upgraded and discounted.

That's enlightening BD. Like most folks, I love a bargain and who wants to pay full price when you can catch a break.
I have been amazed at how much free money is out there with all these CC offers. It's big bucks and we hardly scratch the surface of what CC churners do.

We have been playing the credit card rewards/points game for a few years now. We've gotten HUGE savings on our trips and have been playing the cc points game the last couple of years with great rewards. If you're interested in getting started, you might want to check out The P oints G uy who is full of great information to start playing the points games. Check him out on FB.
Currently there are so many travel bargains we don't even have to use our points. We're headed to the UK in a couple of days on a $400 round trip flight from the west coast. We're definitely taking advantage of the weakened British & EU currency.

Yikes! I have been following TPG lately and a few others as well. Ever since we got over $3000 in cash for travel just for signing up and spending the money we usually spend anyway. I heard it is costing Chase millions to do it, but when we added up everything, they might just keep us.
A guest just told us they got a Business class ticket to Europe for $1700 and I'm kicking myself because we got off topic when he was about to say where he is getting all his great deals.

Glad it worked out well for you!
Yes, there's an article online about getting free upgrades etc at your hotel at check in along with a bunch of them from Hotel I'm possible website...
Our guests on Wednesday got the Worst Check In in our history award! I got back from my parents on Monday night and my aunt told me we were guest less till Thurs or Friday. So we slept in and worked on remodeling one guest room. Nice take it easy days! My aunt was outside and I was heading for the construction zone when I stopped in the front hall. I heard the front door rattling but by the time I got there no one was there but a car was parked. They came back a few minutes later. I gave them a blank look when they said they were checking in (11:30am) and yes, they do have a reservation here. I got my aunt who said. "We don't have any reservations on the book until March"….Ops! Today is March 1st!" Their room was ready but that was about it…. Their friend is our neighbor who lodges her friends here so we all had a great laugh together at our expense later on!

DH was very generous with the free upgrades from the 'down the hall' room until he caught on.
Just yesterday, we got an email from a 'down the hall' reservation asking for a room with an attached bathroom. Sure, but the reason you are paying less is the 'down the hall' thing.
(He also asked how many other people shared the hall bathroom. That bugs me. It is very clear that the bathroom is private. At least it is a clear as we can make it.)

You mean the innkeeper told his guest he had a private bathroom when, in fact, he had a shared bathroom?
That's just not right.

We are happy to upgrade your room for the additional $40/night the other room costs!
We get that shared crap, too. Even after the guest is handed the key to the bathroom they ask who else has a key. Or they write a review saying they had a shared bathroom and be sure you call and ask about which ROOM (as in ONE) doesn't share the bathroom!!!

Me, "and here is your private bathroom. You are the only ones who use this, it is for your room."
Them, "Who do we share the bathroom with?"
Me, "Just each other!"
whatever. I should tell them 5 minutes max and leave a quarter if you shower.

Yup - also to me shared is with 1 other room ie max 4 people which frankly I think if you are all trying to get ready is enough
Neighbour of mine - I was looking for a cheap deal for a chap coming to a convention - he has stayed with us before but has lost his job as was using the convention to scout out for a new one so on a tight budget. She had a shared room online showing - asked how many ie if he was single occupancy and other room single occupancy then only 2 chaps - easy - she said other 2 rooms arn't sold could be 4 more ie could at times be 6 sharing - think that's a bit much! couldn't sell that to people myself
