Originally when I had my website done, I hired someone to install the theme. I used to do a lot of work in HTML, but with css and other elements it was getting to be a bit much for me. But there were little tweaks that had to be done, fixes and the such and so slowly I have had to learn how to work within wordpress and my template/theme.
A few months ago, my theme threw in a tool. I tried using it and it was a disaster. Slowly, I have figure out how to use it (V!sual C0mpo$er). And last week someone posted an error on my website and while I fixed it temporarily, I couldn't get it to do things in the right order when it came to mobile.
Yesterday I started poking around in the templates for VC and low and behold I figured out what I did wrong... I didn't put a inner row. I know, by now you are bored because you have no idea what an inner row is, versus an outer row, but for me this was a revelation. And so have some of those templates.... and I'm learning new stuff, like parallax.
Also found that the guy who did my website set up a whole bunch of SEO pages. Not to my taste... so I started up dating them to look like the website and with new stuff as I test it...woohoo... parallax!

You don't have to use the Visual Composer or Page Builder. Once you get used to it, you can just drag things all over the place. For those unfamiliar it can be daunting at first but I love the options it provides when doing a site. I don't know what theme you are using now.

Something is wrong with your web site right now. I am getting this error:
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@ and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Wow. I'm not getting that. Guess I have to put a ticket in and see if I can figure out what's causing it.

I'm using Karma. VC has the Karma stuff built in, so the shortcodes just work.
I've discovered some new stuff that I can do, like headings and parallax which I didn't know how to do. There are a few things that I'd love to learn, like how they make those boxes that jump a little when you hover over them. When I look at the source I see that they are using using VC themselves on the Karma demo site. But which they would have a way I could see the underlying code. So much to learn.

I have one old site still using Karma and I hate their visual composer. It is not at all like DIVI, ENFOLD or AVADA. I am seriously considering getting rid of it.

I've actually wanted to try a different theme, I'm just afraid of how to do the staging part until it's ready. I'm just not sure how to do that with Wordpress. I want to leave my website ready and then switch.
But I also can't switch to any theme that doesn't support WPML.

Check out DIVI it supports WPML. What you do is set up a subdirectory and call it wordpress, then work on it from there and when you are done, you can use UPDRAFT PLUS to clone and migrate your site to the new directory. I can't help you on WPML though ;-( Most good themes today are all WPML I would try ENFOLD if I were you. They have lots of great templates to get the basis of your site started and they have great support.

The one thing I could never figure out was how to do a date fill in and pass the parameters. I paid someone to fix that for me and it's part of my karma child theme and only works on my english site because the URL is coded.
For Reservation Key it needs to be passed as
https://v2.reservationkey.com//[SITENAME]/s%7Cdd.mm.yyyy%7CDD.MM.YYYY%7Cg
Where dd.mm.yy is the arrival date, DD.MM.YYYY is the departure date and g is the number of guests.
I just want something so they can quickly put in the arrival and departure dates and see availability... but I don't even know where to start to get WP to pass parameters like that.

BTW, they blame the errors on the site using too much CPU. They increased my memory. Thinking... maybe I need a new host. I do 2 GB of transfer a month... can it really be that hard to have good hardware behind the scenes?

Depends on who your hosting is? That sounds like alot. Wanted to share this plugin for you for multiple language sites. All my developer friends recommend it: Polylang plugin
Karma is way passed its prime. even though they provide updates, the newer themes surpass it by miles.

Thanks. I look at that. I paid for WPML but I find that it's overkill. I mean, I have what, maybe 50 pages in total? And it wants to know who's assigned to the translation? Really? It's Generic or Specific, get over it.
I'm going to look at switching the whole website over to a new provider today. I'm tired of the errors, though they found the biggest of the problems, but there just must be too many people on that shared server and rather than deal with the problem... I mean, how hard is it to run a wordpress website that does 1.5GB of traffic a month?
BTW, I think it was you who originally suggested Karma to me... a LONG time ago. I just haven't changed from then :) So, if I really need.. what theme do you think would be the best? And can you give me (even if it's in email) a site or two in that theme that I can look at to see what I can do. I like my site, but it's definitely not current enough.
And I have to do more pictures of the rooms. I've hired people to do it and every damn time I look at the photos, the best ones are usually mine. It's annoying. The last guy's photos are so YELLOW.

We used Enfold. And El, our super helper.
And a pro photo guy who had a mega camera tethered to his laptop so we could, as a team stage, snap, and review in about 20 seconds. Great photo - move on. Good photo - adjust a book or a wrinkle then -snap and review - bad photo- restage or change angle then stage snap review. Amazing way to do it.

Okay, just found one more that seems very up to date, popular and drag-and-drop. Beaver Builder. With this article comparing them... https://athemes.com/reviews/beaver-builder-vs-divi/
And then there is Avada, too.
Now, I'm not sure what to do anymore..
Elementor is the latest builder everyone is raving about. It is said to work with any theme. When I have experimented with it on a test site, I used the vanilla sitepoint theme and then let elementor do its thing. They have lots of templates you can use as well. I have never used Beaver builder but developers I know seem to like it. Personally I don't like using Avada since they have updated the theme. It is not as easy to use as ENFOLD theme.

Well, the old host is GONE as we speak. Everything is moved over and the website is showing up just fine. Trying to check that everything works. One task now on my plate... redoing that slider.
I actually didn't do the original, it was done by the guy I hired to set up the website under the Karma theme. And it's very old. Not that I need to change much, but it's under a very old type of slider and maybe it's just time to redo a new one with a new plugin that's a little more modern.

Yes loading now. I would say get rid of the slider all together and go with one big hero image. People do not wait around to look at sliders they want to go in and get the information quickly. Alot of developers I chat with say sliders are OUT. If a client of mine wants one now..I will only do 2 images any more I people will just leave it. Here's an article about it: https://yoast.com/opinion-on-sliders/

Thingy One- The 4 picture slider we went elevated our website to a better place. The new site improved reservations a lot.
Thingy Two- It time to set it free. It's getting to be time for a redo, and that will mean that SEO will return to the forefront of our thinking. That means the slider is likely going to disappear.
Thingy Three- There have been some very good things about our website that we will want to keep. Our planning tools have really worked to secure reservations.
Thingy Four- DMO? Interaction? Giving website visitors ways to use the site at all three phases of their stay?
I'm off to make breakfast.
